Hello,

I want to secure my Microsoft account by enabling two-step verification, but I am not sure about the correct steps to set it up. Could someone guide me through the process step by step?

I want to know:

Where exactly in the settings I can find the option.

How to set up an authenticator app or phone number.

Any tips to avoid common mistakes during setup.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Scroll down and 2FA should be visible.

Microsoft recommends MS Authenticator App for 2FA:

I strongly recommend you to use Passkey as well which uses your PIN/Fingerprint to sign in.

I hope you find this information useful. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to reach out. Otherwise, please take a moment to rate the thread. Wishing you good luck!

    Hello Lara,

Thank you for posting to Microsoft Q&A Forum!

It's a great decision to secure your account with two-step verification. I can certainly guide you through the process step by step to ensure it is set up correctly.

Here is a guide on how to enable two-step verification for your Microsoft account:

    1. Sign in to your Microsoft account Advanced security options: Additional security options
    2. Under Additional security and Two-step verification choose Turn on or Turn off
    3. Follow the instructions shown on the screen. Follow the on-screen instructions to add your preferred verification methods, such as:
      1. An authenticator app (like Microsoft Authenticator) for code generation.
      2. A phone number to receive verification codes via text message.
      3. An alternate email address that is not the same as your primary account.

For more information about two-step verification, you can refer to the following official article: How to use two-step verification with your Microsoft account - Microsoft Support

    Tips to avoid common mistakes:

    • Set up multiple methods: It is highly recommended to have at least two verification methods (e.g., an authenticator app and a phone number). This ensures you can still access your account if one method is unavailable.
    • Save your recovery codes: During the setup process, you will be given a set of recovery codes. Download or write these down and store them in a safe, secure place. These codes are your last resort for accessing your account if you lose all your other verification methods.
    • Keep your recovery information up to date: Ensure the phone numbers and email addresses you use for verification are current and that you can access them.
    • Test your new settings: After turning on two-step verification, sign out and sign back in to your account to confirm that the new verification method works as expected.

Please let me know if you have any further questions or if any part of the process is unclear.
