You can start small (F2/F4) and scale up. Microsoft also offers trial capacity (F64) for 60 days.
3. What Microsoft Will Need from You to Assess Capacity
When engaging with microsoft to determine the right SKU, they typically ask for:
- Workload mix – data engineering vs. PBI vs. data science, etc.
- Concurrency requirements – number of users/jobs running simultaneously.
- Data volume – size of datasets, refresh frequency, storage needs.
- Latency goals – ex: batch, near real time, or streaming.
- Geographical location – to determine the azure region and compliance.
- Growth projection – how much the workload is expected to scale in 6 to 12 months.
If you already use Power BI Premium or Azure Synapse, they may benchmark those usage metrics as a starting point.
4. Microsoft Support in This Process
Yes, if you have an Enterprise Agreement or Microsoft CSP partner, Microsoft will assign:
- Account Manager / Customer Success Account Manager (CSAM) to coordinate.
- Cloud Solution Architect or Fabric Specialist to do capacity planning with you. If you do not have a direct Microsoft contact, you can:
- Reach out via your CSP partner.
- Use the Fabric contact sales form from Microsoft’s site.
- Ask your local ms office for a Fabric briefing & PoC discussion.
5. Practical Tip for Assessment
If you want a quick, data driven sizing exercise:
- Start a 60 day Fabric trial with an F64 capacity.
- Run a representative workload (datasets, pipelines, notebooks).
- Use the Capacity Metrics App in Fabric to see CPU, memory, and concurrency.
- Share those metrics with Microsoft; they will recommend whether to scale up or down.
