Apologize for late response! I had a discussion with PG and that behavior is by design at the moment. Having said that I am reaching out to you privately on this to understand more on your ask.
At the moment, the only work around is for the user to know if he/she is still a participant on the thread, is by making a call to getThread by Id, and they will get a 403 forbidden response if not.
