Hello @Ralena McCurdy,
Good day! Thank you for posting your valuable question on Microsoft Q&A forum.
The ability to edit the subject line of a received email is currently only available in Classic Outlook. If you're able to switch to Classic Outlook, you can follow this official guide to make the change: Edit an email subject line - Microsoft Support
Unfortunately, this feature is not yet available in New Outlook or Outlook on the web. Microsoft is actively rebuilding Outlook on a modern platform, and many legacy features, including subject line editing, are still in development.
If you want this feature to appear in New Outlook and Outlook on the web in the future. I encourage you to submit feedback and upvote existing feature requests to show demand from the community at Outlook · Community. The Product Team is in-charge of the feedback site, and they are constantly checking the comments and feedback from our customer. Many features have been developed or improved based on users' comment.
After submitting your request on the site, you can return here and paste the link into this thread. That way, other users who visit this discussion can click the link and upvote your request to help bring more attention to it. You can also click "Accept Answer" to pin this response to the top of the thread, making it easier for others to find and support your request.
You can also give feedback to Microsoft Product from Within the New Outlook App:
- Open your New Outlook > go to Help tab > choose Feedback.
- Select the Team to receive your feedback and Choose Give a compliment/Report a problem.
- Fill in the form and submit your feedback.
Alternatively, if you need to Sort your emails, you can use Flags and Categories instead of Changing subject line:
Flags
Flags help you mark emails for follow-up or priority.
- Right-click the email > choose a time (Today, Tomorrow, etc.).
- You can sort or filter your inbox by flagged items.
Categories
Categories let you color-code and label emails.
- Right-click the email > Categorize > choose or create a category.
- You can rename categories to reflect your own system (e.g., “Needs Subject Edit” or “Invoice”).
If comfortable, you can still use Classic Outlook for Windows. Microsoft has confirmed Classic Outlook will be supported until at least 2029 : Outlook Classic Support Until At Least 2029 | Microsoft Community Hub.
Please note that Q&A forum moderators do not have access to backend systems or the ability to change app behavior directly. Our role is to assist based on available documentation and guidance from Microsoft based on our knowledge.
