Yes, the 50% setting is only configurable through the UEFI. 50% is generally used for Kiosk mode and for 24/7 always on situations. I believe that if you remove the 50% limit in the UEFI and shut down and restart your SP8, SmartCharging to 80% will kick in when appropriate. The feature to use the Surface App to manually limit charging to 80% is not available in the Surface Pro 8. Right now, it looks like the ability to manually set to 80% is only available in recent ARM Snapdragon powered Surface devices. Sorry that Jeric steered you in the wrong direction.
Surface Pro 8 Battery Limit setting question
Question about the Battery Limit setting....
I know this is designed to help prolong the life of the battery for those who tend to use their Surface plugged into a power source most of the time, so it keeps it around 50%.
Is there a way to set the percentage higher, like 80% as I mostly use mine in a dock fashion where it's powered from wall / AC power (maybe 3/4 of the time) but I do also use it on the battery but would like to have more charge for the times when I do use it on the battery. I know some people have said to download the Surface app which I did, but I can't seem to be able to adjust the max charge level to more than it's default (50%). Obviously I can enable/disable the feature as needed in the UEFI BIOS but this gets to be a hassle.
Does anyone know how I can increase the max charge level but keep the Battery Limit option enabled?

WHAT? The issue impacted ARM devices, SL7 and Surface Pro 11. NOT Surface Pro 8. Perhaps you should read that thread (and a fix is being tested in the Insiders channels). And, this was not the question that Sirhawkeye asked.

This is now a known limitation with the Battery Limit feature on Surface devices, particularly the Surface Pro 8.
You can refer to the official discussion here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5518540/battery-limit-removed-from-uefi-but-now-only-charg
One of Microsoft Employee has posted an update regarding this behavior, and also there is a provided feedback form where you can submit your experience to help escalate the issue.
If you're looking for a workaround, you might consider disabling Battery Limit via UEFI (if still available).
Regards,
Jeric.
