When you see the message, are you using the web browser version of Word (or Excel)?

Or is this in the full, locally installed applications running under Windows?

    Dear P, Mayura Priyadharshini,

Good day! Welcome to Q&A forum!

To understand the situation better and provide you with the most suitable support, could you confirm the following information:

    • Are you using a personal account (e.g. @outlook.com, @hotmail.com) or a work/school account (e.g. @company.com, @edu)? If you are in an organization, are other users in your organization experiencing the same issue?
    • Is the full error message "We couldn't register this document. You won't be able to create links from other documents to this one. (with a link)"? Could you provide the full text or a screenshot of the error message so I could have a visual reference and more information on it?
    • Is the document stored locally, on OneDrive, SharePoint, or a network drive?
    • Does the error occur with all documents or just specific ones?
    • What version of Windows and Office/Microsoft 365 are you using?
    • Have there been any recent updates or system changes? How long has the issue been going on?

Your confirmation would be very helpful!

In the meantime, kindly try the following suggestions to check what might have caused the issue:

    • Check Save location
      • Please ensure you have permission to save the file to the location
      • Try saving to a different location (e.g., Desktop) to isolate the issue
      • Change the name of the file and try saving it and kindly let me know what happens
    • Check for Office update
      • Open any Office app > File > Account > Update Options > Update Now
    • Start Word/Excel in Safe Mode: This would disable add-ins that might affect saving documents
      • Hold Ctrl while launching Word/Excel
      • When prompted to start Word/Excel in safe mode, select Yes
      • Try editing and saving the affected file, then check if the error message still shows up
      • If the error disappears, disable add-ins one by one via File > Options > Add-ins to see which one is the culprit
    • Repair Office: Please refer to this article for step-by-step instructions: Repair an Office application - Microsoft Support
      • User's image
    • Reinstall Office: You might find this article helpful: Download, install, or reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office 2024 on a PC or Mac - Microsoft Support

Kindly let me know when there are updates or if you need further assistance. Any updates you’re able to share would be really helpful. I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing how things are going!
