Bluetooth Codecs supported in Windows 11

I found that currently the Windows 11 situation with better Bluetooth codecs (high resolution or lossless) is quite unsatisfying. Any plans to change this, or is a dongle like the BDT 700 from Sennheiser the better solution, because it simply works anywhere. Windows 11, Apple iPhone or Mac, you get the quality you want, if your headphones, speakers support the desired quality, like AptX lossless.

Hi Thomas Huth,

I'm Hendrix, here to help with your query on the Microsoft Q&A forums. Apologies for any inconvenience you are experiencing. I am happy to help you today.

Thank you for raising your concerns, it’s completely understandable to feel a bit frustrated when you expect high-quality audio and the system doesn’t seem to deliver. Let’s break down the current situation and your best options.

Here are the codecs that Windows 11 supports today:

  • SBC – The standard codec for all Bluetooth audio devices.
  • AAC – Great for Apple devices and supported natively in Windows 11.
  • aptX (basic) – Available on some systems but depends on your Bluetooth adapter and drivers.

Advanced codecs like aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, aptX Lossless, and LDAC are not natively supported in Windows 11. These require special drivers or external solutions.

Microsoft is focusing on Bluetooth LE Audio and the LC3 codec, which promise better efficiency and quality for future devices. This is rolling out gradually as part of the Bluetooth 5.2+ standard.

And for now, using a dongle like Sennheiser BTD 700 is currently the most reliable way to get high-resolution audio on Windows:

  • The dongle handles the codec negotiation itself, so you’re not limited by Windows’ built-in support.
  • Works across platforms (Windows, macOS, iOS) as long as your headphones support the codec.

If you want the best audio experience today, a quality dongle is the simplest solution. If you’re planning for the future, keep an eye on devices that support Bluetooth LE Audio and LC3. This way, you can make the best decision for your setup and enjoy the audio quality you deserve.
