How to fix Microsoft Authenticator not showing prompt code?

I'm trying to switch from one Teams space to another.

I'm in my company's Teams space and in our client's Teams space.

When I switch from company's Teams to client's, I am asked to log in. The log in prompt shows a code and to authenticate it in Microsoft Authenticator. There is no prompt/ notification in my Microsoft Authenticator to put the number.

I tried the one time code - ERROR.

I have tried removing Microsoft Authenticator as a 2FA in my security but it STILL shows the Microsoft Authenticator issue. I tried putting it back and it's still the same issue. There's also an error to put my mobile number as a 2FA option. I have tried to do this in Web browser Teams, computer Teams app, and mobile Teams app.

    Hi @Mel

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

From your description, the issue seems related to Microsoft Authenticator number matching. When you see a code on the sign-in screen, the system expects you to enter that number in the Authenticator app. Using a 6-digit code will not work in this scenario. This behavior is often enforced by Conditional Access policies or cross-tenant MFA requirements.

To better assist you, could you please confirm following information:

    1. Are you signing in as a guest in the client’s tenant or as a member?
    2. Does the Microsoft Authenticator app show any pending approval when you open it manually?
    3. Have you recently re-registered your Authenticator app at https://aka.ms/mysecurityinfo?
    4. Do you have any other MFA methods (SMS, phone call) configured, and if so, do they work?

In the meantime, please try these steps:

    1. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app manually (do not wait for a notification).
Tap your work/school account and check for a pending approval. If prompted, enter the number shown on the sign-in screen.
    2. Update the app from your app store and ensure notifications are enabled.
    3. If no prompt appears, remove and re-add the Authenticator method at https://aka.ms/mysecurityinfo.
    4. If you cannot access that page, you can ask your IT admin to revoke you MFA to help you re-register your Authenticator method.

Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Your detailed response will help us diagnose and investigate the issue more efficiently. If I misunderstood what you’re looking for, feel free to let me know or share a screenshot. I’d be happy to help further!

    Thank you for your cooperation.
