How can I access Planner Premium data (Dependencies, Resources, Dates, Custom Fields) through Microsoft Graph or any available API?

Hi everyone,

I’m exploring how to access data from Microsoft Planner Premium using an API. I need to read or possibly update project details such as:

  • Task dependencies (e.g., Depends on, Depends after)
  • Resources / assignments for each task
  • Start and finish dates
  • Any custom fields created in Planner Premium

From what I’ve reviewed, the Microsoft Graph API for Planner currently supports the classic Planner entities — plans, buckets, and tasks — but doesn’t seem to include the extended data model used in Planner Premium. I’ve checked /planner/plans and /planner/tasks endpoints, but I don’t see properties for dependencies, resources, or custom fields.

I’d like to confirm:

  1. Can Planner Premium data (dependencies, resources, custom fields, etc.) be accessed through Microsoft Graph API?
  2. If not, is there any other REST API or supported approach to access or modify this data?
  3. Are there any official Microsoft documentation pages or endpoint references that describe this functionality?

Any guidance, sample endpoints, or documentation references would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Rohan Mano

Thank you so much for contacting Microsoft Q&A Forum.

This is a common point of confusion, and your assessment is correct: Planner Premium (which is built on the Project for the web engine) uses a different, more robust data backend than "classic" Planner.

Based on the information and official documentation, here are the answers to your questions.

1.Can Planner Premium data (dependencies, resources, custom fields, etc.) be accessed through Microsoft Graph API?

No. Currently, Premium plans and tasks are not available on the standard Planner API in Microsoft Graph.

The Microsoft Graph API's Planner endpoints (such as /planner/plans and /planner/tasks) do not support accessing or modifying Planner Premium-specific data. These endpoints are limited to "classic" Planner plans and tasks and do not expose properties for advanced features like task dependencies, resource assignments, or custom fields.

2.If not, is there any other REST API or supported approach to access or modify this data?

The data for Planner Premium is stored in Dataverse. Therefore, the supported method to access and modify this data is by using the Dataverse Web API, which is a RESTful OData v4 endpoint.

This API allows you to query and update the entities related to your projects, tasks, dependencies, assignments, and custom fields.

You can register an app in Azure AD, grant it permissions for Dynamics 365 (e.g., the user_impersonation scope), and use OAuth 2.0 to obtain an access token. The API base URL will be specific to your Dataverse environment.

Querying: You can query the data using the Dataverse Web API (RESTful) or the Tabular Data Stream (TDS) endpoint for SQL-like access.

Note: The Dataverse schema for Planner Premium is not fully, and simply, documented, so building direct queries can be complex.

Workaround: As an alternative, you could also use Power Platform connectors (e.g., in Power Automate or Power BI) to interact with or visualize your Planner Premium data, assuming you have the proper access and licensing.

3. Are there any official Microsoft documentation pages or endpoint references?

Below are the documents I found; please take a look:

Use the Microsoft Dataverse Web API (Dataverse) - Power Apps | Microsoft Learn

Frequently Asked Questions - Project for the web | Microsoft Learn

Use V1 Project schedule APIs with Power Automate | Microsoft Learn

Use Project schedule APIs to perform operations with Scheduling entities | Microsoft Learn

I hope this guidance points you in the right direction!
