Voice access dictation is not capitalizing the first letter in a new sentence.

Voice access dictation is not capitalizing the first letter in a new sentence. I found information that it will improve if I enable auto punctuation. This is a problem because:

  1. I've found that if I pause to think during dictation, it inserts commas or periods where I don't want them.
  2. I found the auto punctuation setting when first setting it up, but now that it's been set up, I can't find anywhere how to toggle it back on.

    Dear Bill Gray,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A Forum.

You could try following these steps below to solve this issue:

    1. To find the "Automatic punctuation" Settings:
      • Make sure Voice Access is running.
      • On the Voice Access bar (the bar at the top of your screen), click the Settings icon.
      • A menu will appear. Click on "Manage settings".
      • The "Automatic punctuation" toggle switch is the first option right at the top of this page.
    2. The manual punctuation workflow:
      • Go to the Settings and turn the "Automatic punctuation" toggle OFF. This will stop the unwanted commas when you pause.
      • Now, when you are dictating, you must say your punctuation at the end of a sentence.
      • Voice Access is smart enough to know that after you say "period," the next word you say should be capitalized.

If you forget and your sentence starts with a lowercase letter, you could try to "Capitalize That" Command:

    • You say: "oops this sentence is wrong"
    • Text appears: "oops this sentence is wrong"
    • You say: "Capitalize oops"
    • Text becomes: "Oops this sentence is wrong"

I hope this workflow helps you use Voice Access more normally!
