Dear @smp,
Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum. I understand that when you try to place a call from the Phone app on your Mac, Teams opens instead of dialing through your iPhone’s cellular line, and uninstalling Teams temporarily fixes it until you reinstall.
This issue could cause by Microsoft Teams setting itself as the default app for phone calls on your Mac. When you try to dial a number, macOS uses the default “tel” handler and Teams has taken over that role. That’s why uninstalling Teams temporarily fixed the issue but reinstalling it brought the problem back.
To better assistance, could you please confirm following information:
- Which macOS version are you running (e.g., macOS Sequoia 15.0 or 15.1)?
- Do you see a “Default for calls” option under FaceTime > Settings?
- Is the new Phone app installed and working for other calls (e.g., via iPhone Continuity)?
- Are you signed into the same Apple ID on your Mac and iPhone?
- Is Calls on Other Devices enabled on your iPhone (Settings > Phone > Calls on Other Devices)?
- Does Teams prompt you to become the default calling app during installation, or does it happen silently?
- Are you using Teams for VoIP calls only, or is it integrated with the regular phone network/Direct Routing?
In the meantime, I recommend some steps below:
- Check Default Call App
- Open the FaceTime app on your Mac.
- Go to FaceTime > Preferences (or Settings).
- Ensure “Default for calls” is set to FaceTime (or the Phone app), not Teams.
- Change it to FaceTime or your iPhone (whichever is listed).
- Close the preferences window, your Mac should now use your iPhone for calls again.
- Reset Default Handlers
- Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Default Apps.
- For "tel://" links, set the handler to FaceTime or the Phone app.
- Disable Teams Call Integration
- In Teams, go to Settings > Calls.
- Turn off any option like “Integrate with system for calling” (if available).
Note: those settings could be little differences between versions.
