how do i stop it from changing to the new outlook?

Every time I start Outlook, it goes to "new" Outlook. I don't want that because the "new" Outlook calendar misinterprets calendar invitations that original in a different time zone from me.

Therefore, I want to stay with original Outlook. How do I keep it from changing to "new"?

    Good day @Martha Burns,

I hope everything is going well on your end.

I’m following up on the support thread we've been working through together and wanted to check if you’ve had a chance to try the workaround steps I shared earlier. Any additional information will help us better understand and support you.

Since your account type hasn’t been clarified, I might not be able to give a precise solution. That said, if you’re using a work, school, or personal account (for example, @gmail.com, @outlook.com, @hotmail.com), you can refer to the following details regarding the calendar time zone display issue in New Outlook for windows:

In New Outlook, the calendar events from different time zones can appear differently, especially during Daylight Saving Time changes. This happens because of how time zone data and time bars are managed. Although events are stored in UTC, their display can vary based on your view and settings.

To ensure accurate time zone handling, please verify the following settings in New Outlook:

Go to Settings > Calendar > View.

Under Time zones, confirm that your local time zone is correctly selected.

Optionally, add a second time zone for comparison or travel purposes.

Enable the option: “When I travel across time zones, ask me if I want to update my time zone.”

If you’ve enabled “Show in calendar” for optional time zones, the Day and Work week, or Week views will display times according to your selected settings.

When creating or editing events, use the “Time Zone” option in the event editor to ensure accuracy.

In the event editor, look at the date and time section (where you see “Mon 2025-11-10 03:15 – 03:28”).

Click on the date and time section, then select the “Time Zone” icon.

You will see Time Zone appear as an option for both start and end times.

Select the correct time zone for your meeting.

    Dear @Martha Burns

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand how inconvenient it must be to have Classic Outlook automatically switch to the New Outlook version.

To help me better understand the situation and assist you effectively, could you please share a few details such as:

1/ Are both the New Outlook and Classic Outlook installed on your device?

2/ Is this device personally owned or managed by your organization?

3/ Have you recently updated your operating system and Outlook application?

This will help us better understand the context and provide more targeted support. Any additional information will help us better understand and support you.

As your account type hasn't been specified, I may not be able to provide an exact solution. However, assuming you're using work or school or personal account (such as @gmail.com, @outlook.com, @hotmail.com), you might consider the following information:

Microsoft is gradually transitioning users from Classic Outlook to the new Outlook for Windows. If you haven’t opted in yet and are part of the eligible groups, you’ll receive in-app notifications before being automatically switched.

    • Personal Accounts: Starting October 2024, users with Microsoft accounts (e.g., Outlook.com, Hotmail.com) will be auto switched. Gmail or Yahoo users will follow from March 2025. This applies only to Microsoft 365 Personal or Family licenses.
    • Small & Medium Businesses: Beginning January 2025, users on Business plans (Current Channel) will be auto switched after a series of prompts. You can still toggle back to Classic Outlook anytime. IT admins can disable the switch if needed.

You can return to Classic Outlook anytime via the toggle or Help tab.

Option 1: Check for the “Automatically switch me to New Outlook” checkbox

This checkbox is part of Microsoft’s transition plan. If you're eligible, Outlook will show it once to let you opt out. After you uncheck it and restart Outlook, the option disappears, as it’s designed for one-time use. If you no longer see it, your opt-out was successful. Rollout timing and behavior may vary depending on your account type, license, and update channel.

    To check:

    Open Classic Outlook.

Go to File > Options > General > New Outlook options.

Uncheck “Automatically switch me to New Outlook”.

Restart Outlook and try opening it again.

If Outlook has already switched to the new version, you can return to Classic Outlook using the toggle button.

Option 2: Remove and reinstall the Outlook app

Go to Windows > Settings > Apps > Installing apps, locate the New Outlook app and uninstall it, and reinstall it afterward.

Option 3: Modify the registry to disable New Outlook (Advanced)

    Notes:

Editing the registry should be done with caution, as incorrect changes may affect system stability or require Windows to be reinstalled. Be sure to back up the registry before making any changes.

If your device is managed by your organization, we recommend contacting your IT administrator to perform these steps safely.

To prevent Outlook from automatically switching to the new Outlook, you can opt out of the automatic migration feature. Here are the steps you can follow:

    1. Outlook Options: Go to Outlook Options > General and look for the setting that allows you to opt out of the automatic migration to the new Outlook. This option should be available before the automatic migration starts in January 2025.
    2. Admin Control: If you are an admin, you can disable the user setting for automatic migration. This can be done through group policy or by modifying the Windows registry. To disable automatic migration via the registry, you can set the following:
         [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\office\16.0\outlook\preferences]
         "NewOutlookMigrationUserSetting"=dword:00000000

    3. Hiding the Toggle: If you want to hide the option to switch to the new Outlook, you can also use a policy to hide the Try the new Outlook toggle in classic Outlook. This can be done through the Microsoft 365 Apps admin center or by using the Windows registry.

By following these steps, you should be able to stay with the classic Outlook and avoid switching to the new Outlook automatically.
