Hello,

I Would like to confirm that from the retention policy in Microsoft purview -> Data Lifecycle Management -Policies -> Retention Policy -> Exchange Mailbox, does not also deletes the tasks which are in Planner. Because i can see in outlook from "To Do" tab the tasks that have been assigned to me.

Hi @Chatzilamprou Panagiotis

Thank you for posting your question in the Q&A Forum.

Regarding the interaction between Microsoft Purview retention policies and Planner tasks, based on how these services work together, the Exchange mailbox retention policy in Microsoft Purview generally applies only to content stored directly in Exchange mailboxes such as email messages, calendar items with an end date, notes, and Outlook tasks saved in the mailbox. Because of this design, the policy typically does not affect tasks created in Microsoft Planner.

This behavior is related to how information is organized in Microsoft 365:

  • Planner Data Architecture: The core metadata for Planner tasks (e.g., title, due date, status) is stored within the dedicated Planner service backend. This data resides outside the user's Exchange mailbox, meaning it is not subject to Exchange-specific retention rules.
  • Mailbox Policy Focus: Exchange retention policies are intended for items stored inside the mailbox itself, such as emails, calendar entries, and traditional Outlook Tasks.

What you’re seeing in the To Do tab fits this expected behavior, as Planner tasks continue to appear there even when mailbox retention policies are in place.

If your organization is looking to manage retention for Planner content specifically, that would usually involve applying settings to the Planner workload once it becomes fully available for retention in Microsoft Purview.
