Why is Publisher being discontinued? I have three decades worth of Publisher files for both work and personal usage. Converting these to PDF files would take hundreds of hours. As paying customers (who first purchased successive desktop apps, and then went to your subscription model for years) it is infuriating to learn that Microsoft is going to drop Publisher and leave us without a way to open Publisher files.

Thank you for the answer. Still not happy that it's being discontinued. The trouble with "keeping a working copy of Publisher" is that Microsoft encouraged us to ditch the "working copy" and "upgrade" to the 365 subscription, so I no longer have a "working copy". I understand the need for MS to consolidate/upgrade/modernize from a business standpoint. I also understand my need for things to "just work", including MS Publisher. Losing it is a big problem for me. I don't want to play techy and convert files...I want to them to just work and be able to open them natively. When I think of all the desktop versions of Publisher that I've paid for (and are now gone), and the years of 365 subscriptions I've paid for, it's infuriating to be told that it's being discontinued.

If MS "truly values the investment we’ve made" then why not offer the latest standalone version of Published for those of us who want to buy it?

I understand your frustration. Many long-time Publisher users are in the same situation.

From what I've read, Microsoft is discontinuing Publisher because the company wants to focus on modern Microsoft 365 applications and believes that many of Publisher's common use cases can now be handled through Word, PowerPoint, or other design tools. Unfortunately, that doesn't help users who have built up decades of PUB files and still need access to them.

The biggest concern isn't creating new publications- it's preserving access to existing Publisher documents. A lot of businesses, schools, and individual users have years of newsletters, brochures, templates, and archived projects stored in PUB format. Converting everything manually to PDF can be extremely time-consuming, especially when there are hundreds or thousands of files involved.
