I want to add a user to my domain, however I've lost my admin email log in details and I am the only admin. I've tried my usual domain with .onmicrosoft.com, but that hasn't worked. I've tried to call for support but cannot get past the point when the AI system asks for email. Please help.

    Hi @Mabel,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you for reaching out to us. I understand you’re trying to add a user to your domain but have lost your admin login details, making it difficult to proceed.

When your subscription was first set up, an admin account was created - typically in the format ******@yourcompany.onmicrosoft.com. If you’re unsure of the exact account, start by checking your original purchase confirmation email. Search your inbox for keywords like “Microsoft” or “onmicrosoft.com” to locate those details.

If you can’t find the email and you are the only administrator, and previous attempts using your usual domain format haven’t worked, the most reliable way to regain access to your admin account is by contacting Microsoft’s Data Protection team. Please note that only the Data Protection Team has the necessary permissions to reset your account from the backend. They are the designated and authorized team for handling account-related issues of this nature.

Please follow the steps outlined below to proceed with account recovery and regain access.

Option 1: Contact Microsoft Data Protection Support by Phone (Primary Method)

To regain access to your admin account as you can't access the Admin Portal, you can try reaching out to our Global Customer Service phone to raise a request for resetting your authentication method here: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support. During the call, request to speak to an agent, and share with them every detail related to your query and also mention that you are the only admin lost access to your account. This should allow you to contact the appropriate team so you can solve this incident as soon as possible.

In some regions, the initial interaction may be automated, so here’s a general idea of how the conversation might go to help you prepare. To help you navigate the phone support system more smoothly, here are some tips and a sample prompt you can follow when calling:

(When you call the support number, you may hear an introduction of about 30 seconds such as "you can visit the link...". You can ignore this introduction and wait until you are presented with the options. Then press "1" as a business email user, and again "1" for technical help.)

IVR: What kind of problem are you concerned about?

    You: Authenticator.

IVR: What kind of product do you use?

    You: Office 365 for business.

IVR confirmation: education or company account?

    You: For companies

    IVR: Are you an administrator?

    You: Yes.

IVR: Do you have another administrator in your organization?

    You: No.

IVR: Do you need a... Service request?

You: Yes. I need to create a ticket. Please send me direct to the Data Protection Team.

Option 2: Create a Temporary Account (Trial Tenant) to Submit a Support Ticket (Alternative Method)

If you still cannot reach to a live agent, there is still a workaround, you might consider registering for a new tenant by signing up for a trial subscription via this link Microsoft 365 Business Plans and Pricing | Microsoft 365. This would allow you to create a new tenant following the prompts provided. Once set up, you can access the admin console of the new tenant and submit a support ticket requesting to speak with the Data Protection team on behalf of your previous tenant.

Please note that forum moderators do not have access to user account settings and cannot assist with logging in, resetting passwords, or changing access rights. While we do not have access to internal systems or administrative tools required to resolve account-specific or backend-related issues but we’ll continue doing our best to support you within the scope of our responsibilities.

I hope this helps you regain access to your account quickly. I'm glad to assist and truly hope the information provided has been useful. Please feel free to reach out anytime if you need further assistance.

If you've lost access to your admin email login details and are the only admin for your Microsoft 365 tenant, you can initiate recovery of your tenant access by following these steps:

    1. Confirm Account: Go to the admin portal and try signing in with any previously used email account. If you are prompted to request admin access, follow the provided steps.
    2. Submit a Support Request: If you cannot recover access through the portal, you can submit a support request:
      • Go to the Microsoft 365 support page.
      • Select I can't sign in or access my tenant.
      • You may need to verify your identity and ownership of the organization through official business documentation, domain ownership, or other verification methods.
    3. Contact Your IT Partner: If a Microsoft partner created your tenant or manages your tenant, reach out directly to their support team for recovery assistance.

These steps should help you regain access to your admin account and allow you to add users to your domain.
