Hello Wouter Muijres,
Thank you for reaching out in Microsoft Q&A forum.
I understand you’re unable to complete setup because the child account requires a linked parent account and you can’t access the child account.
The root cause is that the child account was created without linking it to a parent/guardian account in Microsoft Family Safety. For accounts of minors, Microsoft requires parental consent to comply with child account regulations. Without this link:
- The child account remains incomplete and cannot be finalized.
- The system blocks sign-in on the device until parental consent is provided.
- Access to the child account is restricted until it joins a family group and consent is granted.
To resolve this, you’ll need to link a parent account through Microsoft Family Safety and then finalize the child account setup:
Step 1: Sign in with a parent account: Go to https://family.microsoft.com and sign in with the parent, guardian Microsoft account.
Step 2: Add the child account to your family group
- Select Add a family member.
- Enter the child’s email address (the account you created).
- Accept the invitation from the child account.
Step 3: Grant parental consent
- Once the child account joins the family group, you’ll see an option to provide consent.
- Follow the prompts to verify and approve.
Step 4: Finalize setup on the laptop
- Sign in on the laptop using the child account after consent is granted.
- If the device still blocks access, restart and sign in again.
Important: If you don’t have access to the parent account originally linked, you must recover it first via https://account.live.com/password/reset
Let me know how it goes.
