Filtering a Pivot Table in Excel Mobile

Did the Excel Mobile app remove the capability to use the search function in pivot table filters? Every time I try to click the filter and search (the list of items to filter by is very large), the filter kicks me out. It does not allow me to type, or paste anything in the search bar.

    Dear @Kate S,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Since your tag is iOS, I assume that you are using iPhone. In this case, Excel for iPhone/iOS still supports sorting & filtering in PivotTables, however, the behavior you’re seeing might be because Excel on iOS does not fully support the same PivotTable filtering experience as desktop or web versions. When the list of items is very large, the search box in the filter panel can fail to accept typing or pasting.

Excel Mobile is designed primarily for viewing and light edits. Advanced PivotTable interactions, such as searching within large filter lists, are limited on mobile due to UI constraints. For reference: What's New in Excel on Mobile Platforms and Excel for iPhone features

In the meantime, here are some steps I recommend you try:

Step 1: Update Excel (and iOS)

Ensure you’re on the latest Excel for iOS and iOS version; crashes and input issues have been fixed in recent builds across platforms

    Step 2: Force-quit & relaunch Excel

Swipe up > force-quit Excel > reopen the file. This clears a stuck input focus in some builds.

    Step 3: Sign out/in & clear cache

In Excel > Settings > sign out. Relaunch, sign in again. If the issue persists, temporarily delete & reinstall Excel.

Step 4: Try a local copy

If the workbook is opening from cloud (OneDrive/SharePoint), use “Make Available Offline” or download a copy and test. Network hiccups sometimes interrupt the filter/search UI on mobile.

Moreover, if the issue still persists, I recommend you create a new Excel file and copy the data into it, then rebuild the PivotTable.

    • Open Excel on your desktop or web.
    • Create a new blank workbook.
    • Copy the source data from the old file into the new one.
    • Insert a fresh PivotTable and apply the same fields.
    • Save the file as .xlsx and upload it to OneDrive or SharePoint.
    • Open this new file in Excel Mobile and test the filter search.

For the best experience, I recommend you use Excel for Web or Excel Desktop when you need to search and filter large PivotTable lists. These platforms fully support the search function. Keeping the app updated and restarting it can help with stability, but for complex filtering tasks, the web or desktop version is the most reliable option.
