I cant really call it a virus. My SD cards won't delete or format in this computer but the do in my other computer. So, I reformatted, deleted the partitions, rebuilt the partitions, reformatted again. It didn't work, his computer still insists they are write protected.

I first noticed it when I bought a new camera and thought it was the SD card that came with the camera...Or perhaps a virus that came with the camera.

So, I ran DISM and SFC...but nothing, the disk (SD Card) is still "write protected." It should know it is a removable drive, I changed it to EXfat and defaults.

So, Im posting here because this is the computer with the newest Win11 version 25H2. All of your publishec crap online has me going into the registry, but DISM does that. So, it has to be my DISM has the wrong ammunition coming to it from your online server.

"Locate Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies"

File doesnt exist in Windows 25h2. It is bullshit, the file does not exist.

----------------------------->

(I had a Windows Vista computer years back...I've heard every bit of Microsoft's bullshit at least three times. I even had an asshole at a Verizon phone service a few months back insisting that he worked for the NSA and knew that it wasn't possible for somebody to be robbing debit cards without access to my phone and my internet. "Well, then how does anyone buy anything, asshole? there isn't a single gas staion on the planet who needs my phone or my internet.")

    Hello Joe N,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum. It's my pleasure to help you today.

I understand that you are having issue formatting your SD card. About your situation, the previous thread might be not clear enough, so please allow me to explain it a little bit.

    • The "File not found" message usually doesn't appear in the Registry Editor, even if you are trying to access a path that doesn't exist. Usually, this only happens in the file explorer or its search function. Also, the StorageDevicePolicies might not exist on all computer. If you don't see it, you will need to create one.
    • SFC and DISM only scan and restore system file or Windows Image Corruption, so it won't affect external drives like your SD card at all. Also, the DISM won't be able to directly revert any change to the registry.

In this case, let me explain the steps you should try step by step to make sure that everything is done correctly.

Disclaimer: Generally, modifying registry subkeys or work group is intended for advanced users, administrators, and IT Professionals. It can help fix some problems, however, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For further protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click How to back up and restore the registry in Windows - Microsoft Support to view the article.

    1. Open your Windows searchbar.
    2. Type "Regedit" and press Enter.
    3. A UAC control prompt will appear. Please select "Yes".
    4. In the address bar of the Registry Editor please paste this path in and press Enter. Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
    5. In the left side of the screen, you will see the folder "Control" in highlighted. Please click on the arrow next to it to expand the menu. User's image

Search the list of keys under "Control" to see if you can find a key called "StorageDevicePolicies". If you can find any, please create one by right clicking the "Control" key and select "New" > Key and name it StorageDevicePolicies.

    1. Select the newly created key to open it. In the right side of the panel, right click on it and choose New > DWORD (32-bit). Name it "WriteProtect"
    2. Double click on it, in the "Value" field. Set it to 0 and select OK.
    3. Restart your PC.

    I hope this helps.
