Board view in SharePoint Lists shows column headers but does not render cards. Issue occurs only in production lists, not in new test lists, as of now. No filters applied. Other Sharepoint list with less data has the same issue.

Board view in SharePoint Lists displays column headers but does not render cards. The issue occurs only in production lists, not in new test lists. No filters are applied. It started recently without any changes.

I tested in different ways: the SharePoint site has six lists, and all of them fail in Board view—cards do not render, but a number appears in the bucket name. The field is of Choice type, with no filters applied, not sorted, and no blank spaces (it is a mandatory field).

Another similar SharePoint site has one list and shows the same issue.

I tested on a different site with a new list containing 39 items, and it worked.

I also tested on other SharePoint site and seems to be working, although we have some special format in the list, like colored the cards green, yellow and red, and show/hide a field depends of specific response.

I am not able to create another field in the original list because workflows and Power BI reports depend on this data. Any change would seriously impact the data and dashboards. I need to know if this bug will be fixed soon and when. This is critical for the organization.

The issue you're experiencing with the Board view in SharePoint Lists, where column headers are displayed but cards do not render, could be related to several factors. Since this problem occurs only in production lists and not in new test lists, it may indicate a specific configuration or data issue in the production environment. Here are some steps you can consider:

    1. Data Volume: Since you mentioned that other SharePoint lists with less data do not have this issue, it's possible that the volume of data in the production lists is affecting the rendering of cards in the Board view.
    2. Choice Field Configuration: Ensure that the Choice field used for categorizing items in the Board view is configured correctly. Sometimes, if the choices are not set up properly or if there are any inconsistencies, it can lead to rendering issues.
    3. Browser Cache: Clear the browser cache or try accessing the lists in a different browser or in incognito mode to rule out any caching issues that might affect the display.
    4. Permissions: Check if there are any permission-related issues that might be preventing the cards from rendering properly in the production environment.
    5. Updates and Bugs: Since you mentioned that this started recently without changes, it might be worth checking if there are any known issues or updates from Microsoft regarding SharePoint Lists and the Board view. Keeping an eye on Microsoft’s official communications or forums may provide insights into whether this is a widespread issue and if a fix is forthcoming.

If the problem persists, consider reaching out to Microsoft support for further assistance, especially since any changes you make could impact workflows and reports that rely on the data.

    Hi @Adriana Chaves

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you for reaching out regarding the issue you’re experiencing with the Board view in SharePoint Lists. I appreciate the detailed information you provided and understand how critical this functionality is for your workflows and reporting.

Based on my findings, this behavior may be caused by factors such as mandatory choice columns, custom JSON formatting, view configuration or sorting, large data volumes, or recent service updates affecting Board view rendering.

The Q&A Assist response correctly highlights that the issue may stem from factors such as large data volumes impacting rendering performance, incorrect or inconsistent Choice field configuration, browser cache problems that can be resolved by clearing or testing in incognito mode, and permission settings that might restrict card rendering in production lists.

Given this situation, I’d like to share some additional workarounds that I hope will be helpful to you:

1/ Remove sorting from the Board view

Even if sorting is not visibly applied, hidden sort settings can sometimes exist in the view configuration and cause rendering issues.

    • Open the list in SharePoint.
    • Click Settings (gear icon) → List settings.
    • Under Views, select the Board view you are using.
    • Scroll down to the Sort section.
    • Ensure both First sort by column and Then sort by column are set to None.
    • User's image
    • Click OK or Save.
    • Refresh the Board view and check if cards appear.

2/ Temporarily disable Card Designer or JSON formatting

Custom formatting (such as conditional colors, hiding/showing fields, or reordering fields) can interfere with Board view rendering.

    • Open the list.
    • Click View options → Format current view.
    • User's image
    • Choose Edit card > Reset to default style.
    • User's image
    • Save the changes.
    • Refresh the Board view to check if cards render.
    • If successful, you can reapply formatting later once the issue is resolved.
    • Format board view to customize SharePoint | Microsoft Learn

3/ Access the list via Microsoft Lists app instead of SharePoint site

Some users report that the Microsoft Lists app (web or desktop) handles Board view better than SharePoint pages.

    • Go to Microsoft Lists via https://lists.microsoft.com or the Lists app in Microsoft 365.
    • Open the same list and switch to Board view to see if cards render correctly.

4/ Reindex the list from List Settings

Reindexing forces SharePoint to rebuild the search index for the list, which can resolve rendering problems caused by outdated or corrupted indexing.

Note: The steps provided above only involve view settings and formatting adjustments. They do not create, delete, or modify any existing columns or data in your list. Your workflows and Power BI reports will remain unaffected because the underlying schema and data structure are not changed.

    5/ Contact Microsoft Support

If this issue is urgent and directly impacting your team’s productivity, I strongly recommend reaching out to your IT department and asking them to open a support ticket with Microsoft Technical Support through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. They have access to system-level diagnostics and can investigate the problem more thoroughly. At the very least, they can provide the most effective workaround to ensure your experience remains smooth and secure.
