If I only have a Microsoft Teams Rooms Pro or Microsoft Teams Rooms Basic license, can I record meetings with that license, or do I need something additional, or is the license alone sufficient for recording meetings?

    Dear @Zijada Sadikovic

    Welcome to the Q&A Community.

I understand that you would like to know whether a Microsoft Teams Rooms Pro or Basic license alone allows the meeting room device to record meetings, or if additional licensing or configuration is required.

With a Teams Rooms Basic license, the room device does not include built‑in meeting recording controls.

Meetings can still be recorded. However, the recording must be initiated by a participant who holds a user license that supports recording such as Microsoft 365 Business Standard, E3 or E5. In this setup, the Teams Rooms device joins the meeting normally, but it cannot start or stop the recording from the console. To capture the meeting, an eligible participant needs to start the recording from their Teams desktop or mobile client, and your organization’s meeting recording policies and storage settings must already be enabled.

For Teams Rooms Pro, the device can start and stop recordings directly, as long as your tenant’s meeting recording policy permits it and your environment uses a supported Teams Rooms app version. If either the meeting organizer or the room account lacks permission to record, the recording controls will not appear on the console.

    • If your intention is to enable recording directly from the Teams Rooms device, upgrading the room account to a Teams Rooms Pro license would be required.
    • If you prefer to continue using the Basic license, meeting recordings can still be captured by having a participant with the proper user license initiate the recording from their personal Teams client. Afterwards, the video can be uploaded or shared through OneDrive or SharePoint as needed.

To record meetings using Microsoft Teams, you need to have a compliance recording policy assigned to your user account. While having a Microsoft Teams Rooms Pro or Basic license allows you to participate in meetings, it does not automatically grant the ability to record them. Therefore, you will need an additional compliance recording policy assigned to your account to enable recording capabilities for meetings.
