Dear masterchefneedahelp

Thank you for your question and for sharing the details into Microsoft Q&A Forum.

I understand that Windows 10 is unexpectedly switching between Night Mode and Day Mode during the day even though no changes were made by you. Please feel free to check the Independent Advisor’s reply, their answer is clear, practical, and definitely worth trying as well. This behavior can be inconvenient, and I’m here to help you check the possible causes along with the steps to resolve them.

1. Incorrect system time or time zone

If the device clock or time zone is incorrect, Windows may think it is evening or early morning and toggle Night Light automatically.

Please check Settings > Time & Language > Date & Time and ensure your time zone and clock are correct.

2. Third‑party color management apps

Please review installed applications and temporarily disable or uninstall any color‑adjustment software.

3. Windows Update:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Select Check for updates and install all available updates to ensure system stability.

4. Windows Update:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Select Check for updates and install all available updates to ensure system stability.

5. Check PowerToys (if installed)

  • Recent versions of PowerToys include a Light Switch feature that auto‑changes Light/Dark mode and may enable itself after updates.

I hope these steps help stabilize your display settings and prevent Windows from switching between Night Mode and Day Mode unexpectedly. Wishing you a smooth and consistent experience with your Windows 10 device, and feel free to share any updates so I can continue assisting you if needed.

Hello, I'm Quinn and here to help!

This usually happens because Night Light is set to a schedule. To disable it:

    1. Press Win + I > System > Display
    2. Toggle Night light > OFF
    3. Click Night light
    4. Toggle Schedule night light > OFF
    5. Restart your computer

Windows 10 can switch between Night Mode and Day Mode automatically based on settings configured for blue light reduction or other display settings. If you have enabled features like Night Light, it may be set to activate or deactivate based on a schedule, which could result in unexpected changes during the day.

Additionally, if you are using the Light Switch utility from PowerToys, it can automatically switch your Windows theme between light and dark modes based on the time of day, such as sunrise and sunset times in your location. This could also lead to the behavior you are experiencing if it is configured to switch themes at certain times.

To troubleshoot this issue, you can check the following:

    1. Night Light Settings: Go to Settings > System > Display and check the Night Light settings to see if it is set to turn on and off automatically.
    2. Light Switch Utility: If you have PowerToys installed, check the Light Switch settings to see if it is enabled and configured correctly.
    3. Focus Assist: Ensure that Focus Assist is not interfering with your notifications or display settings during certain times of the day.

By reviewing these settings, you should be able to identify why your computer is switching modes unexpectedly.
