I am a teacher, and we have access to Microsoft for some of the assignments we do. I have 2 students who are having issues. One can not remember their Authenticator password. When they try to reset, it sends a code to the Authenticator, but he can not log in to see the code. The other has the incorrect phone associated with his account. I need assistance, please.

    Hi @Robert Huffines,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum, and I’m sorry to hear your students are having trouble accessing their school accounts.

From what you’ve described, it seems that both students are running into verification issues that they likely won’t be able to fix on their own. In school‑managed Microsoft accounts, there are usually limits on what students can change. For the first student, the reset process appears to send a prompt to an Authenticator app they can’t open, which can create a loop that usually needs someone on the admin side to clear. For the second student, the incorrect phone number may also be something they can’t update themselves, as schools might keep those verification settings restricted for security reasons.

To resolve both cases, please contact your school’s IT administrator and ask them to reset each student’s authentication methods so the students can sign in again and set up their verification information correctly. You can also share the steps in this Microsoft article for the IT Help Desk or support team so they can help reset your MFA settings for your students Manage user authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication.

Once your school's IT admin has reset their MFA, the students should be able to sign in again and set up their Authenticator or phone number normally.

Please note that forum moderators do not have access to user account settings and cannot assist with logging in, resetting passwords, or changing access rights. While we do not have access to internal systems or administrative tools required to resolve account-specific or backend-related issues, we’ll continue doing our best to support you within the scope of our responsibilities.

I hope this helps your students regain access to their accounts quickly. I'm glad to assist and truly hope the information provided has been useful. Please feel free to reach out anytime if you need further assistance.

For the student who cannot remember their Authenticator password and is unable to receive the reset code, they may need to complete the recovery process. Since they cannot access the code sent to the Authenticator app, they should try to reset their password in InPrivate mode or clear their browser data. If that does not work, using a different browser or network might help. If these steps do not resolve the issue, they should complete the recovery form to regain access to their account.

For the second student who has the incorrect phone associated with their account, they should attempt to update their contact information. If they cannot access their account due to the incorrect phone number, they may need to go through the recovery process as well. This can include filling out the recovery form to verify their identity and regain access.

It is also advisable to check if they are configured for more than one verification method, as this could provide an alternative way to authenticate their accounts.
