What happens when you try to start Word? The specific words of any error messages are important.

If you are saying that there are no errors, just restart your PC and, if the problem remains, run an Online Repair of Office.

    Hi @Ivana Berkachi,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble opening Microsoft Word. I know how  inconvenient that can be, especially when you need to start working right away.

To assist you more effectively, could you please let me know the following:

    • Do you see any specific error message when trying to open Word (for example, “Word has run into an error” or “Something went wrong”)?
    • Are other Office apps, such as Excel or PowerPoint, able to open normally?
    • Are you using a school account (for example, ******@university.edu) on this device?

If Word or any other Office app shows an activation message or “Unlicensed product”, please sign in with your school or work account that includes Microsoft 365 Education and complete the activation steps. If you're already signed in with your school account but still see the message, please contact your IT support team to ensure the correct license has been assigned to you.

Here are some recommended steps you can try:

    1. Update Windows and Office

    • Office: Open any Office app > File > Account > Update Options > Update Now
    • Windows: Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates

    2. Start Word in Safe Mode

This helps determine whether add‑ins are blocking Word from opening:

    • Press Windows + R
    • Type: winword /safe
    • Press Enter

    If Word opens:

    • Go to File > Options > Add‑ins
    • At the bottom, choose Manage: COM Add‑ins > Go…
    • Uncheck all add‑ins
    • Open Word normally again and then re-enable add‑ins one by one to identify the problematic one.

    3. Repair Microsoft 365/Office

    • Windows 10/11: Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features)
    • Find Microsoft 365 / Office > … > Modify
    • Choose Repair

(Repairing Office will affect all apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

I hope this information helps. Please try the steps and let me know whether they resolve the issue. If the problem persists, we can work together to find a solution.

If you are unable to open Microsoft Word, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Repair Office: Sometimes, repairing the Office installation can resolve issues. You can try running an Online Repair, which is more thorough than a quick repair. Make sure to exit all Office applications before doing this.
    2. Check for Updates: Ensure that both Windows and your version of Office are up to date. This can help fix any compatibility issues that may be preventing Word from opening.
    3. Disable Add-ins: Sometimes, add-ins can cause problems. You can start Word in Safe Mode to see if it opens without any add-ins. If it does, you may need to disable or remove problematic add-ins.
    4. Check Disabled Items: If Word crashes while opening a document, it may be added to the list of disabled items. You can check this list and re-enable the document if necessary.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may want to consult the Microsoft support site for more detailed troubleshooting.
