Hi @Bowe Corey,
Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.
Based on the details you shared that your Classic Outlook view changed automatically, and you are not able to return it to the way it was before. I genuinely appreciate the time and effort you took to explain the situation, and I want to make sure I get your layout back to what you are comfortable with.
In most cases, this happens because Outlook applies a different preset view, a saved view becomes inconsistent, or a background update synchronizes folder settings and replaces the previous layout. Additionally, Outlook can store view preferences separately by folder, so the Inbox may change even if you did not adjust anything intentionally. For that reason, restoring the default view and then reapplying your preferred settings usually brings everything back to normal.
Below are some workable options that might be the most appropriate for your current situation:
1/ Reset the view for the folder that changed
- Open Classic Outlook and select the folder that looks different, such as Inbox.
- Select the View tab.
- Choose Reset View, and then confirm when prompted.
As a result, the folder returns to Outlook’s default layout.
2/ Reapply the layout options that match your previous setup
- Stay on the View tab, and then select Reading Pane to choose your preferred position, such as Right or Off.
- Select View Settings or Current View, and then verify the following:
- Columns: add back the fields you used before, such as From, Subject, and Received
- Sort: sort by Received date, typically newest to oldest
- Group By: turn grouping off if you prefer a simple list
This step is important because it restores the details you see, not only the general view style.
3/ Apply the corrected view across other mail folders for consistency
- Once the Inbox looks correct, go to the View tab again.
- Select Change View, and then choose Apply Current View to Other Mail Folders.
- Select the folders you want to update, such as Sent Items and Deleted Items, and then select OK.
Consequently, Outlook uses the same layout across the folders you selected.
4/ If the view keeps changing, rebuild views and check add ins
- Close Outlook completely.
- Press Windows + R, type
outlook.exe /cleanviews, and then press Enter.
This rebuilds the default views and removes conflicting custom views. - If the issue returns, start Outlook in Safe Mode by pressing Windows + R, typing outlook.exe /safe, and then pressing Enter.
If the view remains stable in Safe Mode, an add in may be affecting view settings, so you can disable add ins from File, then Options, then Add ins.
If you share what exactly changed (for example, reading pane position, columns missing, message preview, conversation view, or spacing) and whether it affects only Inbox or multiple folders, I can provide the most precise settings to match your original layout.
I hope this information is helpful. Please follow these steps and let me know if it works for you. If you have any updates regarding the issue, please feel free to share them with me.
Thank you for your patience and your understanding. I look forward to continuing the conversation.
