Teams Desktop App Not Showing Chat History/Channel Posts After Reinstall

We encountered a Teams issue, so we uninstalled the Teams app and reinstalled it from the official website. However, after reinstalling, previous chat history and posts in Teams channels are not visible in the Teams desktop app. They are displayed normally in Teams on the web.

Could you please advise on how to resolve this so that the same content is also visible in the Teams desktop app? If possible, I would appreciate detailed step-by-step instructions.

Thank you.

Dear Jang Minki

Good day! Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum!

Based on your description, I understand that after reinstalling the Teams desktop app, you’re no longer seeing your previous chat history or channel posts within the app, even though everything appears normally when using Teams on the web.

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused by this issue.

Regarding this situation, kindly try the following suggestions to check what might have caused the issue:

  • Sign out of Teams completely: Sometimes Teams needs a full refresh to re-sync your data.
    • Right‑click the Teams icon in your taskbar > Select Quit Teams
    • Reopen Teams, sign out and sign in again
    • User's image
  • Clear the Teams cache: Clearing the cache forces the desktop app to rebuild data and often fixes missing chat/channel content. Please refer to this article for step-by-steps instructions according to your device Windows/MacOS (New Teams): Clear the Teams client cache - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn

I hope this information is helpful. Please follow these steps and let me know if it works for you. If not, we can work together to resolve this.

Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Any updates you’re able to share would be really helpful. I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing how things are going!

Thank you for your time and patience.

If you are experiencing issues with the Teams desktop app not showing chat history and channel posts after reinstalling, here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

  1. Ensure You Are Signed In: Make sure you are signed into the Teams desktop app with the same account that you use on the web version.
  2. Check for Updates: Sometimes, the desktop app may not display content correctly if it is not updated. Check for updates by clicking on your profile picture in the top right corner and selecting "Check for updates."
  3. Clear Cache: Clearing the Teams cache can help resolve display issues. To do this:
    • Close Microsoft Teams completely.
    • Navigate to the following folder: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Teams
    • Delete the contents of this folder (do not delete the folder itself).
    • Restart Teams.
  4. Check Permissions: Ensure that you have the necessary permissions to view the chat history and channel posts. Sometimes, permissions may not be set correctly after reinstalling.
  5. Reinstall Teams Again: If the above steps do not work, consider uninstalling Teams again and reinstalling it. Make sure to download the latest version from the official Microsoft Teams website.
  6. Use the Web App: If the desktop app continues to have issues, you can use the web version of Teams as a temporary solution until the issue is resolved.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may want to reach out to your IT administrator or Microsoft support for further assistance.
