Dear Team,

I have Microsoft 365 developer program account setup with MFA. I lost my device so can't use the Authenticator application to verify. Also, I don't have backup of Microsoft Authenticator app.

Now I am not able to login to my Microsoft 365 developer account.

I cant find any way to login to account. Looking for your support ASAP

    Hi @Healthy Life

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand that you are unable to receive your two-factor authentication (2FA) code from the Microsoft Authenticator app after losing your device.

Since your email is a business account, your company IT team or Helpdesk may be able to reset your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) settings. This will allow you to reconfigure MFA from scratch on your new device.  As general Microsoft Support, we do not have administrative access to change these settings. Only your IT team has the ability to adjust or reset your MFA configuration.

You can also refer to this Microsoft support article for more information: Manage authentication methods - Microsoft Entra ID | Microsoft Learn

If you are the only Global Administrator for the tenant and are completely locked out, you can follow the AI suggestion and contact Microsoft Support by phone to request assistance from the Data Protection team, who can help reset MFA and restore access to your tenant: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support.

Regarding the AI suggestion to create a temporary trial tenant to open a support request.

Assuming that you have already created an account after registering a free trial and you can go to Microsoft 365 admin center and click "Help & support" icon to raise your ticket. During this process, please make sure to turn off the Support Assistant.

When submitting the ticket, clearly indicate that you are doing so on behalf of the affected tenant to which you no longer have access. Prepare all necessary information to prove ownership of the affected tenant. The support team will help move the case under the correct tenant, and the Microsoft Data Protection team will process it from there.

Please note that this recovery process typically takes 7–14 working days, as the Data Protection team handles a high volume of requests. As a forum moderator, I do not have access to internal systems and cannot expedite the process.

Note: The trial subscription is valid for 30 days. Before it expires, please remember to cancel it in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center to avoid any charges. You can follow the cancellation steps provided in Microsoft’s official guidance: Cancel your Microsoft business subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft Learn.

    I hope this helps.

If you have any additional concerns, feel free to comment below. I would be more than happy to assist.

Because the Microsoft 365 Developer Program account is protected by MFA and the device with Microsoft Authenticator is lost with no backup or alternative sign-in method, self-service recovery is not possible.

For a work/school-based Microsoft 365 developer tenant, recovery of the only admin account in an MFA lockout scenario must be handled by Microsoft support (Data Protection team). Forum moderators and documentation cannot reset MFA or bypass verification.

    Required next steps:

    1. Try any alternative MFA methods, if previously configured
      • When prompted for verification, choose Sign in another way if that option appears.
      • If an alternate method (SMS, phone call, or other) is listed, use it to complete sign-in and then update MFA methods.
      • If no alternative method is available or SMS/phone also fails, proceed to step 2.
    2. If this is a work/school (organization) developer tenant and you are the only admin
      • Contact Microsoft support by phone and request the Data Protection team to help reset MFA for the tenant admin:
        • Use the regional number from Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support.
        • When the IVR asks what the problem is, state “Authenticator” or “lost account”.
        • When asked which product, answer “Office 365 for business” / company account.
        • Confirm you are the administrator and that there are no other admins.
        • Ask to create a service request and be routed to the Data Protection team to reset MFA for the locked tenant admin.
      • Be prepared to verify identity and tenant ownership as requested by support.
    3. If support is hard to reach, create a temporary trial tenant to open a ticket
      • Sign up for a free Microsoft 365 trial tenant (business plan).
      • In the new tenant, go to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center → Help & support.
      • Open a support ticket clearly stating:
        • This is a different, temporary tenant.
        • The problem is an MFA lockout on the admin account of another Microsoft 365 tenant (your developer tenant).
        • Provide the locked tenant’s domain and admin UPN and request escalation to the Data Protection team for MFA reset.
      • After resolution, cancel the trial subscription in Billing → Your products to avoid charges.

If the developer account is instead tied to a personal Microsoft account (not work/school), use the standard Microsoft account recovery and MFA troubleshooting flows, including alternate proofs and passwordless options, as described in the referenced documentation.
