Does Office 2024 install on Server 2019?

Hi Microsoft Support,

We currently use Excel 2021 SPLA on Server 2019 and want to install Excel 2024 to use a new license for Office 2024. According to the sys reqs, Office 2024 is compatible with Server 2022 and 2025; however, this article states the configuration.xml is compatible with Server 2019:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=106246&msockid=2cc685522a8a6a373c5193ef2b9d6b86

We use the configuration.xml to install Excel only. Would we be able to update our file to download and install Excel 2024 on Server 2019 by updating the lines below to install it? -

<Add OfficeClientEdition="64" Channel="PerpetualVL2021">
<Product ID="ProPlusSPLA2021Volume" PIDKEY="xxxxxxxxxxxx">

<Add OfficeClientEdition="64" Channel="PerpetualVL2024">
<Product ID="ProPlusSPLA2024Volume" PIDKEY="xxxxxxxxxxxx">

Thanks.

Dear @Michael Auby,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Forum!

Thank you for the detailed information and for sharing the system requirements you reviewed. I completely understand why this is confusing, and I’d like to clarify how Microsoft defines support in this scenario:

1.Why the system requirements appear to include Windows Server 2019:

The system requirements you referenced (LINK) are from the Office Deployment Tool (ODT) download page. These requirements describe:

  • Which operating systems can run the Office Deployment Tool
  • Which platforms are supported for KMS and Active Directory–based activation

That documentation confirms that ODT itself, as well as KMS/AD activation infrastructure, can run on Windows Server 2019. However, this does not mean that Office LTSC 2024 (or Excel 2024 SPLA) is supported on Windows Server 2019.

2.Here is Official Microsoft support statement for Office LTSC 2024:

According to Microsoft’s official documentation for Office LTSC 2024, the supported operating systems are explicitly listed as:

  • Windows 11*
  • Windows 11 LTSC 2024
  • Windows 10 LTSC 2021
  • Windows 10 LTSC 2019
  • Windows Server 2025
  • Windows Server 2022

Windows Server 2019 is not listed as a supported operating system for Office LTSC 2024. You can find this clearly stated in Microsoft Learn here: Overview of Office LTSC 2024

3.What this means for your configuration.xml question:

Technically, updating your configuration.xml to:

<Add OfficeClientEdition="64" Channel="PerpetualVL2024">

<Product ID="ProPlusSPLA2024Volume" PIDKEY="XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX" />

may allow the installation to proceed on Windows Server 2019, because the Office Deployment Tool itself supports that OS.

However, from Microsoft article’s perspective, this would be considered an unsupported configuration. In this scenario:

  • Stability and future updates are not guaranteed
  • Microsoft Support may be unable to assist with issues related to Office 2024 on Server 2019

Therefore, you have several options to consider it:

  • Continue using Excel 2021 SPLA on Windows Server 2019
  • Upgrade the server OS to Windows Server 2022 or later, then deploy Excel / Office LTSC 2024 using ODT

Also, I want to give you a summary:

  • Office Deployment Tool and activation services support Windows Server 2019
  • Office LTSC 2024 / Excel 2024 SPLA is not supported on Windows Server 2019
  • Office LTSC 2024 is supported on Windows Server 2022 and newer

I hope this explanation helps clarify the distinction and assists you in planning the best supported path forward.
