Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Error code PaymentAuthenticationVerificationFailed when finalizing a Microsoft 365 subscription indicates a problem with verifying the payment method during authentication.
To resolve this and complete the subscription purchase:
- Confirm the subscription status
- Go to the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions / Subscriptions page and sign in with the same Microsoft account used for the purchase.
- Check whether the Microsoft 365 subscription is shown as active, expired, or not created at all.
- Update or change the payment method
- Go to the Payment options page for the Microsoft account.
- If the current payment method shows any error or warning, update its details (card number, expiry date, billing address, etc.).
- If updating does not help, add a different payment method and set it as the one to use for the Microsoft 365 subscription, then retry the purchase/activation. A similar issue was resolved by changing the payment method.
- Complete any required bank authentication
- If the bank requires strong customer authentication (multi‑factor) for online payments, follow any instructions received by email/SMS from the bank to approve the charge.
- If no code is received, verify the phone/email registered with the bank, check spam/junk folders, confirm network connectivity, and request the code again.
- If the code fails repeatedly or does not arrive, contact the bank to validate the contact information and ensure the card can be used for online recurring subscriptions.
- Retry the subscription purchase
- After updating the payment method and completing any required bank authentication, sign back in to the Microsoft account and retry finalizing the Microsoft 365 subscription.
If the error persists after these steps, contact Microsoft Support with the error details and correlation ID so support can review the failed payment attempt.
