Follow these steps to regain access when MFA codes are not arriving and Windows sign-in depends on a Microsoft account:

    1. On another device (phone browser or another PC), go to the Microsoft account sign-in page and try to sign in with the same account used on the laptop.
    2. When prompted for a verification code, carefully check that the code is being sent to the correct security info:
      • Primary alias or an email/phone that was explicitly added as a way to verify sign-in.
      • Make sure the email address shown (first two characters) matches the registered one.
    3. Check the email account used for MFA:
      • Look in Inbox and Junk/Spam for a message from @accountprotection.microsoft.com.
      • Mark @accountprotection.microsoft.com as a trusted sender so future codes arrive in the inbox.
    4. If the registered email is another Microsoft account (for example, an @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, or @msn.com address), use private browsing so both accounts can stay signed in:
      1. Open a browser in privacy/InPrivate mode.
      2. Sign in to the first Microsoft account (the one that needs the code) and proceed until it asks for the verification code. Leave this tab open.
      3. Open a new privacy/InPrivate window (for example, Ctrl+Shift+P in Microsoft Edge).
      4. In the new window, sign in to the alternate Microsoft email account where the code is sent and read the message from the Microsoft account team.
      5. Copy the verification code and return to the first window to enter it.
    5. If codes still do not arrive:
      • Avoid repeatedly requesting codes, as excessive requests can cause temporary blocking of code delivery.
      • Check whether the account might be temporarily blocked due to unusual activity; in that case, waiting for the block to clear may be required.
    6. If access to the registered security email/phone is lost:
      • Start sign-in to the Microsoft account and, at the “Verify your identity” prompt, choose I don't have any of these.
      • Follow the steps to replace security info. After replacement, there is a 30‑day wait before full sign-in is allowed. If the old security info becomes available during that period, it can still be used to sign in, which cancels the pending change.
    7. If none of the above works and sign-in to the Microsoft account is still not possible, use the sign-in helper and/or account recovery form from another device to attempt recovery, as Windows sign-in with that account depends on successfully authenticating the Microsoft account:
      • Use the Sign-in helper to diagnose common sign-in issues.
      • If necessary, follow guidance in Help with the Microsoft account recovery form and submit the recovery form.

If sign-in to the Microsoft account cannot be recovered, creating a new local or Microsoft account on the device may be required, which can involve data loss for files tied only to the locked profile.
