PowerPoint / macOS: Lag when using laser pointer or pen during recording

Dear all

When recording lectures on my macOS device, I consistently experience noticeable lag when using the laser pointer or pen in PowerPoint. This issue essentially makes lecture recording unusable for me. Could you please help me resolve it?

How to reproduce the problem

  • Start recording a presentation.
  • Press Cmd + L to enable the laser pointer (or press Option + Left mouse button).
  • For about one second, the laser pointer moves smoothly.
  • After that, the movement becomes jerky for several seconds.
  • Only after around five seconds does it become smooth again—briefly—before the lag returns.

This jerky motion is also visible in the exported MP4 recording.

System details

  • macOS 26.3.1 (Tahoe)
  • PowerPoint 16.106.3 (26030211)

Could you help me find a solution to this issue? Thank you!

    Hi @Normanius

Thank you for reaching out and for the detailed information about the laser pointer issue in PowerPoint. I understand how frustrating this can be, especially when recording lectures.

I tested this behavior on my end but wasn’t able to reproduce it. Based on similar reports, the issue seems related to certain macOS input methods rather than the presentation file. Some users have seen improvements when using an external mouse instead of the trackpad, or by applying firmer pressure on the trackpad while using the laser pointer.

This behavior is also more noticeable when PowerPoint is recording and rendering pointer effects at the same time. On macOS, these actions rely on system‑level processes, which can cause the pointer to lag in both playback and exported MP4 files.

You may try the following workarounds:

    • Use an external mouse during recording
    • Avoid switching input methods while presenting
    • Try the pen tool instead of the laser pointer
    • Record your screen using macOS screen recording or another capture tool as a temporary alternative

Since the issue isn’t consistently reproducible across environments, it might be linked to a specific combination of macOS version, PowerPoint build, or hardware. If it persists, please contact your IT admin to submit a support request through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. A support engineer can then run diagnostics and escalate to specialized teams if needed.

While moderators cannot access backend tools, we’re here to provide guidance and troubleshooting steps. I hope this helps point you in the right direction. Please let me know if any of these suggestions work or if you need further assistance. If you found this response helpful, please consider marking it as accepted to help others in the community.

Thank you for your patience, and I’m happy to continue supporting you.

The issue is persistent even under reduced system load, when recording with an empty slide deck, and it occurs immediately—even without rapid tool switching.

The context only provides general guidance on using the laser pointer and improving media performance in PowerPoint, not a specific fix for lag with the laser pointer/pen during recording on macOS Tahoe.

From the available information, only general performance-improvement steps can be suggested:

    1. Reduce media and effects load in the presentation
      • Compress embedded audio/video in the deck to reduce processing overhead: use the media compression guidance in PowerPoint to decrease presentation size and improve playback performance.
      • Limit special effects on media (shadows, reflections, glow, soft edges, bevels, 3‑D rotation) as these can negatively affect playback and responsiveness during recording and export.
    2. Adjust how the pointer is used during slide show
      • Ensure the pointer mode is set appropriately (Automatic/Hidden/Arrow/Pen) so PowerPoint is not frequently switching modes, which can add overhead.
      • On macOS in Slide Show mode, use the Pen/Laser Pointer tools from the helper buttons in the lower-left corner and keep to a single tool (Laser Pointer or Pen) rather than switching repeatedly while recording.
    3. Re-test with a simpler presentation
      • Create a new, minimal presentation (few slides, no or very small media, no heavy effects) and record while using the laser pointer/pen. If lag is reduced, the issue is likely related to media size/effects and can be mitigated by simplifying or compressing content as above.

If the lag persists even with a very simple presentation and after reducing media/effects, the context does not provide further macOS/Tahoe-specific troubleshooting steps or known issues for this scenario.
