    Dear @CD

Thank you for reaching out. I understand how inconvenient it can be when documents show as “Saved” but the updates don't appear in SharePoint even after many hours. Based on the behavior you described, the issue may relate to local upload delays, library settings, or sync interruptions.

Below are several targeted checks that can help identify the issue:

Note: If you don't use OneDrive to sync your SharePoint documents, you may skip options 6 and 7.

Option 1: Check for files that require your attention in the Office app

Sometimes the Office app shows “Saved” even though the cloud upload has not been completed.

Open the app you used, such as Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.

Select File > Select Open > Select Files Needing Attention > Re‑save any files listed there.

    User's image

This step often reveals pending uploads that prevent changes from reaching SharePoint.

Option 2: Verify check‑out status in the SharePoint library

If a file is checked out, your changes stay local until the file is checked back in.

Go to the SharePoint library > Select the file > Select More and then Check in.

Option 3: Review versioning and approval settings

Some libraries require approval before changes become visible to others.

    • If you only have Edit permission: You can ask your colleagues whether they can see the updated version of your file in the SharePoint library. This helps confirm whether the update is pending approval.

    User's image

    • If you have Full Control permission, you can review the approval settings by following these steps: Open Library settings > Select Versioning settings > Check if content approval is required > Approve the item or update draft visibility.

This is especially important if you don't see changes while another user can.

    Option 4: Complete required metadata

If certain columns are mandatory, SharePoint will not publish the latest version until the required fields are filled.

Select the file > Open the Details pane > Review and complete any fields marked as required.

Option 5: Clear the office document cache

If Office shows “Working” for a long time or uploads remain stuck, corrupted cache files can cause delays.

Open any Office app > Select File > Select Options > Select Save > Open Cache Settings and clear the document cache.

    User's image

After clearing the cache, re-save the file to trigger a fresh upload.

Option 6: Check the health of your OneDrive sync client

OneDrive issues can prevent files from uploading to SharePoint.

Select the OneDrive cloud icon on your computer.

Check if sync is paused or showing errors.

Confirm the affected file is not stuck in pending status in File Explorer.

If needed, reset or relink OneDrive and allow it to perform a full resync.

Option 7: Re-establish the connection if you are syncing the library locally

If the library is synced through the OneDrive client, the connection may need to be refreshed.

Open the OneDrive client > Verify the library is actively syncing.

    Remove or pause the library.

Reconnect through Sync or Add shortcut to OneDrive.

Using Add shortcut to OneDrive is generally more reliable for quick visibility across devices.

    Option 8: Contact Microsoft Support

If the issue persists, I recommend reaching out to your IT administrator to create a support ticket via Microsoft 365 Admin Center > Support > Help & Support for further investigation.

A technical support engineer can perform a remote session to investigate the situation, verify the backend configurations, and run any necessary synchronization tools to resolve the problem. If the issue requires further attention, they can escalate it to a specialized team for deeper analysis.

Our primary role is to guide users toward the appropriate resources and support channels. I hope this information is helpful. If you have any questions or need further support, please don’t hesitate to reach out at any time.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Follow these steps to troubleshoot SharePoint documents that show as saved but do not sync after many hours:

    1. Confirm SharePoint access and library sync configuration
      • Sign in to Microsoft 365 with the work or school account.
      • Browse to the SharePoint site and open the document library where the files are stored.
      • Make sure the library is accessible and that the Sync option is available. If the site is not configured for syncing, the site owner must enable Library settings > More library settings > Advanced settings > Offline Client Availability.
    2. Check for sync conflicts or failed uploads
      • In the affected list or library view, go to View > All items > Items that need attention.
      • If any items appear there, refresh the page and try the update again.
      • If conflicts keep reappearing or there are no conflicts but data still does not sync, collect details and proceed to support.
    3. Verify file and path limitations
      • Ensure no file is larger than 15 GB.
      • Ensure the full path (folders + file name) is under 400 characters.
      • Make sure file names do not contain illegal characters such as <, >, :, ", |, ?, *, /, \ and that there are no unsupported file types.
      • If any of these conditions are violated, rename or move the files/folders and save again.
    4. Check volume of files being synced
      • If a very large number of files (especially more than 100,000) is being synced, sync can appear stuck for a long time.
      • In File Explorer, right-click the OneDrive folder that is syncing SharePoint and select Properties to see how many items it contains.
      • If the count is over 100,000, reduce the number of folders/files being synced by choosing which OneDrive/SharePoint folders to sync.
      • Use Pause syncing and then Resume syncing from the OneDrive icon in the notification area to restart the sync process.
    5. Check for local changes not syncing
      • Again use View > All items > Items that need attention in the SharePoint list/library.
      • If conflicts persist after refresh and retry, prepare to contact support.
    6. Repair the Office/OneDrive integration
      • Repair or reinstall Office if sync conflicts are suspected between Office and SharePoint.
      • If sync issues continue, reset the OneDrive sync client.
    7. Collect logs and contact Microsoft support if the issue persists
      • Enable web app logging for the affected list/library using browser developer tools and capture console logs.
      • Collect client logs from %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\logs\ListSync.
      • When opening a Microsoft support request, include:
        • The sign-in email (work/school account).
        • Approximate time when the issue occurred.
        • Detailed description of what was edited and which files/lists are not syncing.
        • Browser type and version.
        • Screenshots and the collected logs.

These steps will help identify whether the problem is due to conflicts, unsupported files/paths, volume limits, or client-side sync issues, and provide the necessary data if escalation to Microsoft support is required.
