Hi Greg Kaiser,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with BitLocker, especially since the same key worked earlier and now suddenly doesn’t. When the motherboard is replaced, the TPM chip changes and BitLocker likely sees this as a completely different device. Here's what to do next:
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey
- Sign in with the exact Microsoft account you used on this laptop
- Match the Key ID shown on the BitLocker screen (not device name).
- If you don’t see a matching ID, you don’t have the key for it anymore.
- If the correct Key ID exists, try to enter it again - slow and careful.
- If you're sure the key is entered correctly, but is still rejected:
- The drive metadata no longer matches the TPM state
- The key is valid, but the encryption relationship is broken
- Unfortunately, there is no way to force BitLocker to accept it again.
- You will need to reinstall Windows 11 clean, all data on the drive is lost.
I know that’s not what anyone wants to hear, but I think it's better to be upfront about the situation. If you're not confident making changes yourself, consider reaching out to a professional repair service for checking.
