I had the mother board replaced on my laptop and it asked for the bit locker key. I typed in the one I have and it does not work. I used the same key for reset earlier in the week but now the key will not work.

    Hi Greg Kaiser,

I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with BitLocker, especially since the same key worked earlier and now suddenly doesn’t. When the motherboard is replaced, the TPM chip changes and BitLocker likely sees this as a completely different device. Here's what to do next:

    1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey
    2. Sign in with the exact Microsoft account you used on this laptop
    3. Match the Key ID shown on the BitLocker screen (not device name).
    4. If you don’t see a matching ID, you don’t have the key for it anymore.
    5. If the correct Key ID exists, try to enter it again - slow and careful.
    6. If you're sure the key is entered correctly, but is still rejected:
      1. The drive metadata no longer matches the TPM state
      2. The key is valid, but the encryption relationship is broken
    7. Unfortunately, there is no way to force BitLocker to accept it again.
    8. You will need to reinstall Windows 11 clean, all data on the drive is lost.

I know that’s not what anyone wants to hear, but I think it's better to be upfront about the situation. If you're not confident making changes yourself, consider reaching out to a professional repair service for checking.

A BitLocker recovery key is unique to a specific encrypted drive and its protectors. After a motherboard (TPM/firmware) replacement, the drive may now require a different recovery key than the one used earlier in the week.

    Use these steps to resolve:

    1. Confirm the key ID matches
      • On the blue BitLocker recovery screen, note the Key ID shown.
      • Compare it with the Key ID associated with the recovery key you have. If the IDs do not match, that key will not work for this prompt.
    2. Check all possible locations for other recovery keys BitLocker keys are often stored in multiple places. Check each of these:
      • Microsoft work or school account (if the device was ever joined to an organization):
        1. From another device, go to https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey.
        2. Sign in with the work or school account used on the device.
        3. Select Devices, expand the affected device, and choose View BitLocker Keys.
        4. Match the Key ID on the screen with the one shown on the locked PC, then use that 48‑digit key.
      • Printout: Look for any printed BitLocker key documents kept with important papers.
      • USB flash drive: If the key was saved to a USB, plug it into another PC and open the text file to read the 48‑digit key.
    3. If the correct key is found
      • On the BitLocker recovery screen, carefully type the full 48‑digit key (hyphens are optional). If correct, Windows will start normally.
    4. If no working key can be found
      • If the device is managed by an organization, contact the IT department; they may be able to retrieve the key.
      • If no valid key exists in any of the locations above, BitLocker cannot be bypassed. The only option is to reset the device using Windows recovery options, which will remove all files on the encrypted drive.

BitLocker is designed so that without a valid recovery key, the data on the drive cannot be decrypted, even by Microsoft support.
