Online Verification

My main outlook email has been blocked due to unusual activity. My phone number in account is old, and I have gone through the verification online steps several time, with 100% accurate information (how are 4 email addresses and subject lines not enough?). But it keeps coming back not working. HOW HOW HOW am I supposed to recover this now when there isn't even a way of contacting anyone?

    Hi,

Please note that here in the Microsoft Q&A forum, we are fellow users and do not have access to any accounts or internal systems.

When your account is blocked and you no longer have access to any recovery methods, I first suggest waiting 24–48 hours without attempting to sign in, as repeated attempts can extend the temporary block.

After that, try signing in again. If the issue persists, then unfortunately you will need to fill out the account recovery form again.

If you receive a reply stating that the information provided was insufficient, you will need to submit the form again with any new information you remember. Please note that you can submit the form up to two times per day until you recover your account.

    Helpful Tips:

    • Include contacts, subject lines of past emails, or any services you used (like Skype or Xbox).
    • Complete the form using a device and location you’ve previously used to sign in.
    • The more accurate information you provide, the better your chances of success.

If you're still unsuccessful after several attempts, please refer to the “Account recovery unsuccessful” page: https://support.microsoft.com/account-billing/account-recovery-unsuccessful-dc56c3e3-dff0-4ed5-8edb-60290eea6b53

If the issue still persists, let Microsoft know by filling out the reinstatement form here: https://www.microsoft.com/concern/AccountReinstatement

Note: This is different from the account recovery form.

The Microsoft team will review the reason your account was locked. If they determine that you are the rightful owner, they will reinstate your account. Please note that they typically respond within 48 to 72 hours. Be sure to check your junk and spam folders for their response.

The account is almost certainly blocked by Microsoft’s automated security due to unusual activity and/or too many failed or repeated recovery attempts. When that happens, only the automated recovery and unblock flows can restore access; direct support cannot bypass them for consumer Outlook.com accounts.

Use these steps, in order, based on the documented behavior:

    1. Stop repeated attempts for a while
Multiple failed sign‑in and recovery attempts can extend or reset the lockout. Wait at least 24 hours with no sign‑in or recovery attempts before trying again. If it still fails, wait longer (up to a week) before the next attempt.
    2. Try a different verification method if any exist
If the sign‑in page offers “Use another way to sign in” or similar, select it and use any other method on the account (alternate email, different phone, Microsoft Authenticator, etc.).
This aligns with the guidance for the “Try another verification method” message: if one method is blocked, another may still work.
    3. Change network, device, and browser
Because blocks can be tied to network or device patterns:
      • Use a different network (e.g., switch from home Wi‑Fi to mobile data or another Wi‑Fi).
      • Use a different device that has been used to sign in to this account before, if possible.
      • Use InPrivate/Incognito mode or a different browser and clear cookies/cache before trying again.
    4. Be aware of regional and traffic‑based blocks
Microsoft may slow or block verification when there is heavy compromised traffic from a region, or when behavior looks risky. These are temporary and automatically clear after some time; repeated attempts can prolong them.
    5. If SMS is involved, check phone‑related issues
If any part of the flow still uses SMS (even to a current number):
      • Ensure the phone is not blocking texts from unknown numbers.
      • Confirm the inbox is not full and the messaging app is working.
      • VOIP numbers cannot be used; only a mobile number is valid.
    6. If all methods fail and the form keeps being rejected
For a consumer Outlook.com/Microsoft account, there is no manual override if the automated recovery and verification systems do not accept the information. The documented options are:
      • Wait out any temporary blocks (24 hours to several days) and try again with the recovery/sign‑in helper.
      • Use the sign‑in helper troubleshooter to confirm the exact issue and see any remaining support options: Start.

If the account was also hacked or security info was changed by someone else, the only supported path remains the recovery and hacked‑account guidance; if those fail repeatedly, Microsoft Support cannot manually restore access for consumer accounts.
