    Hi tomas shemesh,

I understand how frustrating it can be when a camera driver keeps disappearing, especially when you want to resolve it on your own without paying for technical support. Have you already tried the Q&A Assist suggestions? In addition, please try the following.

1, Check Windows camera privacy settings

If camera access is briefly blocked, the driver may appear to “disappear”.

    • Go to Start > Settings > “Privacy & security” > “Camera”
    • Make sure:
      • “Camera access” = On
      • “Let apps access your camera” = On
      • “Let desktop apps access your camera” = On

2, Disable power saving for the camera (very common cause)

Windows may turn off the camera to save power, causing it to vanish until reboot.

    • Right‑click Start > “Device Manager”
    • Expand “Cameras” or “Imaging devices”
    • Right‑click your camera > “Properties”
    • Open the “Power Management” tab
    • Uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”
    • Select OK, then restart

3, Check for Optional driver updates

Camera fixes are sometimes delivered as optional updates.

    • Go to Start > Settings > “Windows Update”
    • Select “Advanced options”
    • Open “Optional updates”
    • Install any driver update related to Camera, Intel, AMD, or OEM

    Hi ,

If it is a laptop or desktop, if possible, could you provide the laptop model or your desktop configuration?

Do you have any third-party antivirus software installed and does your keyboard have a button or key with a camera icon, if it's a laptop?

    Thanks

Yes, this can usually be troubleshot without paid support. Intermittently disappearing camera drivers are often caused by driver or detection issues rather than a single “bug.” Use these steps when the camera vanishes or stops working.

    1. Check for simple hardware/privacy causes
    • If using a laptop, check the function keys (F1–F12) for a camera icon and press that key (or Fn + that key) to enable the webcam.
    • Check for a physical privacy slider or shutter on the camera lens and make sure it is open.
    • If using an external USB camera, unplug it and plug it back in firmly, preferably into a different USB port on the PC (not through a hub if possible). If available, test the camera on another device to rule out hardware failure.
    1. Run the Camera troubleshooter
    • Select Start > Settings > System.
    • Select Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
    • Find Camera and select Run. This can automatically fix common detection and configuration problems.
    1. Reinstall or update the camera driver If the camera appears but fails with errors or disappears intermittently:
    • Open Device Manager (right‑click Start > Device Manager).
    • Expand Cameras (or Imaging devices, Sound, video and game controllers if the camera is listed there).
    • If the camera is listed:
      • Right‑click it and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers. Restart the PC after the update.
      • If problems persist, right‑click the camera and select Uninstall device. If available, check Delete the driver software for this device and select Uninstall. Restart the PC so Windows can reinstall the default driver automatically, then in Device Manager right‑click the camera again and select Update driver.

If the camera stopped working after a Windows update and then disappears:

    • In Device Manager, right‑click the camera > Properties > Driver tab.
    • Select Roll Back Driver if available, confirm with Yes, then restart and test the Camera app.
    • If rollback is not available or does not help, use the uninstall/reinstall steps above.
    1. Handle specific error codes (if shown) If the Camera app shows an error code when the device is present:
    • For detection errors such as 0x80070490 or 0x80004003/0x80004005:
      • Run the Camera troubleshooter as above.
      • Then reinstall the camera driver via Device Manager (uninstall with Delete the driver software for this device if available, restart, then Update driver).
    • For 0xA00F4294 (Video start failed):
      • Update the camera driver in Device Manager using Search automatically for drivers, then restart.
    • If antivirus or firewall software is blocking the camera (e.g., 0xA00F4246 or 0x800706BE):
      • Temporarily disable the antivirus/firewall from its Settings/Tools/Protection area, test the camera, then re‑enable protection and update the security software.
    1. When the camera is not listed at all If the camera is completely missing from Device Manager even under View > Show hidden devices, and basic checks (function key, privacy shutter, USB port, testing on another device) do not help, this often indicates a hardware or firmware issue. In that case, the next step is to:
    • Go to the PC or camera manufacturer’s support page and install their latest webcam driver or firmware.
    • If the device still never appears, contact the manufacturer’s hardware support.

These steps address the common causes of disappearing camera drivers (driver corruption, Windows updates, antivirus interference, and hardware/connection issues) and can be performed without paid technical support.
