    Hi Dominique Olson,

I understand how frustrating it can be when the camera still doesn’t work even after using the switch and function keys. Have you already tried the Q&A Assist suggestions? In addition, please try the following.

Step 1: Check Windows camera privacy permissions

Even if the physical switch is on, Windows can still block the camera at the system level:

    1. Go to Start > Settings > “Privacy & security” > “Camera”
    2. Make sure “Camera access” is On
    3. Also turn On:
      • “Let apps access your camera”
      • “Let desktop apps access your camera”

Step 2: Confirm whether Windows detects the camera at all

This helps identify whether the issue is software‑related or possibly hardware‑related:

    1. Right‑click Start and open “Device Manager”
    2. Expand “Cameras” (or “Imaging devices”)
    3. Check:
      • Is the camera listed at all?
      • Is there a small down arrow or warning icon on it?

Try these steps in order on Windows 11:

    1. Check physical camera controls
      • Since the switch and Fn/F-keys are already checked, look closely at the camera area for a small privacy slider/shutter and make sure it is fully open.
    2. Test the camera in the built-in Camera app
      1. Select Start > Camera.
      2. See if the preview works.
      3. If it works here but not in other apps, the problem is with that specific app’s settings.
    3. Run Windows Update and restart
      1. Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
      2. If View optional updates appears, open it and install any camera-related updates.
      3. Restart the PC (not just wake from sleep), then test the Camera app again.
    4. Check antivirus or security software
      • Some antivirus/firewall tools can block the camera. Temporarily disable camera/webcam protection in that software and test the Camera app. Re‑enable protection after testing.
    5. Reinstall the camera driver
      1. Open Device Manager (search for device manager from Start).
      2. Expand Cameras (or Imaging devices), right‑click the camera, choose Properties.
      3. Go to the Driver tab, select Uninstall Device.
      4. Check Delete the driver software for this device, then select OK.
      5. In Device Manager, open the Action menu and select Scan for hardware changes.
      6. After it reinstalls the driver, restart the PC and test the Camera app again.
    6. Switch to the in-box UVC driver (USB webcams)
      1. In Device Manager, right‑click the webcam under Cameras or Imaging devices and select Update driver.
      2. Select Browse my computer for drivers.
      3. Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
      4. Choose USB Video Device and select Next.
      5. Close the dialog, then test the Camera app.
      • Note: This generic driver may not support special features such as Windows Hello face recognition.

If the camera still does not work after these steps, check the laptop or camera manufacturer’s support page for specific camera drivers or hardware diagnostics.
