    Hi Paul Bailey,

To better understand what’s happening before suggesting any changes, could you please clarify a few points:

    1. Which keyboard layout is currently selected on your PC (for example: US, UK, US‑International)?
    2. Is this an external keyboard or the built‑in keyboard on a laptop?
    3. Do the characters mismatch in all apps (for example, Notepad and browsers), or only in specific programs?
    4. Does the behavior change if you switch to another keyboard layout temporarily?

Once I have this information, it will be clearer whether this is a layout configuration issue or something else, and we can proceed accordingly.

    Thank you for your patience.

Windows does not let users arbitrarily change what each key does only when Shift (capital) is held, but different keyboard layouts have different Shift mappings. To change what appears when Shift is pressed, switch to a layout whose shifted characters match expectations.

On Windows 11, to see or choose a layout that matches the physical keyboard:

    1. Open SettingsTime & languageLanguage & region.
    2. Under Preferred languages, select the language (for example, English (United States) or English (United Kingdom)) and choose Language options.
    3. Under Keyboards, add or select the layout that matches the hardware, such as:
      • US Keyboard (KLID: 00000409)
      • United States-International Keyboard (KLID: 00020409)
      • United Kingdom Keyboard (KLID: 00000809)
      • United Kingdom Extended Keyboard (KLID: 00000452)
    4. Remove any layouts that do not match the printed keycaps.

To verify which characters each key produces with Shift, use the layout diagrams in the references below. These show what each key outputs in normal, Shift, Caps, and AltGr states, so the shifted characters can be matched to the physical key labels.

If specific keys still do not match even with the correct layout selected, this is typically a hardware issue (for example, a different printed keycap set than the selected layout) rather than a Windows setting.
