I have a product code to renew Microsoft 365 subscription. When trying to activate it requires recurring billing to be set up - I put in credit card details, verify that "I am human" and then process gets stuck

    Hello mark hewett,

I see that you're having Microsoft 365 Activation Issue. I suggest you try these steps:

    1. Bypass the stuck recurring-billing screen (redeem the key directly)
    • Open a browser and go to https://setup.office.com/?source=microsoft365?
    • Sign in with the same Microsoft account that already owns your Microsoft 365 subscription (important).
    • Enter the 25‑character product key and complete redemption there (this renews/extends the subscription).

The renewal guidance explicitly supports renewing by entering a new product key (separate from turning on recurring billing). For reference: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/how-to-renew-your-microsoft-365-subscription-58f3d0f8-15c4-4ad8-8c5f-16d682e8b545

    1. Confirm the renewal actually applied to the right account (common cause)

If you redeemed the key while signed into the wrong Microsoft account, it may not extend the subscription you expected. Microsoft specifically warns to “always check you are signed in with the correct Microsoft account when redeeming.”

    1. If the site still forces recurring billing, turn it on from Services (different flow)

Instead of the stuck redemption page:

This uses the subscriptions management flow (often avoids the hang on the setup page).

    1. If it’s hanging because payment verification is failing, use Microsoft’s payment fixes

Microsoft notes that banks may require extra verification and that keeping account/payment details updated can be necessary for transactions to succeed. Use:

    • Troubleshoot payment option issues
    • If you hit a billing block during redemption, Microsoft says to go to your Payment & billing page and use “Change how you pay” / “Fix how you pay.”

Also: when asked for country/region during renewal, Microsoft recommends choosing the country/region where you live or do your banking.

I hope this will help with your situation. Please feel free to reach back if you have further update or more questions.

    Best Regards,

The product key can be used to extend the subscription without relying on recurring billing, but the correct flow must be completed and the correct account and region must be used.

    Use these steps:

    1. Confirm the subscription and account
      • Go to the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page: Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page.
      • Verify that the Microsoft 365 subscription to be renewed is listed under the same Microsoft account being used during activation.
    2. Redeem the product key directly
      • Go to https://microsoft365.com/setup (or https://www.microsoft365.com/setup as noted in the product-key article).
      • Sign in with the same Microsoft account that owns the Microsoft 365 subscription.
      • Enter the 25‑character product key from the card/receipt.
      • When prompted for country/region, select the country/region where residence or banking is located, as recommended in the renewal article.
      • Complete the steps to finish the renewal; the new expiration date should then appear on the Services & subscriptions page.
    3. If recurring billing setup keeps hanging
      • Recurring billing is one of two renewal options; the other is redeeming a new product key or download code. The renewal overview confirms that entering a new product key is sufficient to renew and extend the subscription.
      • If the flow that forces recurring billing continues to get stuck after the “I am human” verification, bypass it by redeeming the key directly at the setup URL above instead of from within the stuck flow.
    4. If errors persist or the subscription does not update
      • If the subscription still shows as expired or canceled after redeeming the key, or the payment/verification screen continues to hang, contact Microsoft Support for direct assistance with the renewal error, as advised in the renewal‑problems article.
