Issue: I am not able to share my o365 subscription.

Error with the share link (not email link): When the person I want to share with clicks on the generated share link I texted them, they get the following error message: "Looks like this invitation link is not working. 1 more step to go: please ask organizer to go to Subscriptions tab on account.microsoft.com and click on "Start Sharing for you."

E-mail Link: I sent them a link to their email with the email link option, it does not work either.

Steps: I removed the person I want to share the subscription with from my family group, then re-added them. I generated new links, tried multiple browsers, but still the person I send the link to get the error stated above.

Just to know: One of the screenshots says that I, the organizer, needs to enable sharing for the person. How do I do that? All I see if the ability to share the subscription, which is not working.

See screenshots attached. microsoft1.pdf

Hello Hannah Morgan, I see that you're having issue with Microsoft 365 Family's invited link. Let me assist you further.

I suggest you try these steps:

    1. Confirm you’re the actual subscription owner

If you don’t see Start sharing, Microsoft says you may not be the owner of the Microsoft 365 Family/Premium subscription (or you’re signed into the wrong Microsoft account).

Check here: Services & subscriptions and make sure the plan shown is the one you pay for.

    1. Check if invitee fully “Join now” to your family group (Family plan requirement)

For Microsoft 365 Family, sharing only works after the invitee has joined your Microsoft family group (“Join now”). Only then will your dashboard show Start sharing for them.

    1. Ask the invitee if they are in another family group (or already receiving another shared subscription)

It blocks sharing if the invitee is already in another family group or already has the full benefits from another shared subscription. They must leave the other family group / resolve the other shared subscription first.

    1. You might hit the sharing limit (seats)

You can share with up to five other people. If you’re at the limit, you must Stop sharing with someone before sharing with a new person.

    1. The link expired / pending invite stuck

Invites need to be accepted within 48 hours; otherwise generate and send a fresh one. If so, reshare invited link:

On the Subscriptions page, under the Microsoft 365 Family or Premium subscription > Share subscription. Choose:

    • Send an email invitation to the person’s preferred email address; or
    • Or Copy link and send that link directly.

    Ask the invitee:

    • Open the link while signed in with the Microsoft account that should receive the benefits.
    • Select Join now and complete joining the family group.

I hope this will help with your situation. Please feel free to reach back if you have further update or more questions.

    Best Regards,

The error indicates that the invitee has not yet been fully added to the Microsoft family group and that sharing has not been completed from the Subscriptions page.

To enable sharing for the person and resolve the “invitation link is not working” / “Start sharing for you” message, follow these checks and steps in order:

    1. Confirm subscription type and status
      • Go to the Subscriptions page of the Microsoft account.
      • Verify that the subscription is Microsoft 365 Family or Microsoft 365 Premium and that it is active.
      • If Share subscription is not visible, the subscription cannot be shared and must be switched to a shareable plan first.
      Relevant rules:
      • Only the subscription holder of an active Microsoft 365 Family or Microsoft 365 Premium subscription can share.
      • If Share subscription is missing, it is not a Family subscription.
    2. Check share limits and existing shares
      • On the same Subscriptions page, check how many people are already using the subscription.
      • A Microsoft 365 Family or Premium subscription can be shared with up to five other people. If this limit is reached, remove someone before sharing with a new person.
    3. Ensure the invitee is in the correct family group
      • Sharing works only when the invitee joins the subscription owner’s Microsoft family group.
      • If the invitee is already in another family group, they must leave that group first; otherwise, they cannot join and the sharing will not complete.
      • After leaving any other family group, have the invitee use the new invitation again.
    4. Re-share correctly from the Subscriptions page
      • On the Subscriptions page, under the Microsoft 365 Family or Premium subscription, select Share subscription.
      • Use one of these options:
        • Send an email invitation to the person’s preferred email address; or
        • Copy link and send that link directly.
      • The invitee must:
        1. Open the link while signed in with the Microsoft account that should receive the benefits.
        2. Select Join now and complete joining the family group.
      • Only after they successfully join the family group will the subscription dashboard update and show that sharing is active for that person.
    5. If the invitee sees “It looks like you’re already in a family group”
      • This specific error means the invitee is already in a different family group.
      • They must leave that existing family group, then use the invitation again to join the subscription owner’s family group.
      • Once they have joined the correct family group, the subscription owner can share Microsoft 365 benefits with them.
    6. If the subscription was recently changed or expired
      • If the Microsoft 365 Family or Premium subscription recently expired and was renewed, or if there were changes to the family group, it may be necessary to:
        • Remove the person from sharing, then
        • Re-share the subscription with them from the Subscriptions page.

There is no separate “enable sharing for this person” toggle beyond the Share subscription flow. The required actions are:

    • Ensure the subscription is a shareable Family/Premium plan and active.
    • Ensure the invitee is not in another family group and successfully joins the subscription owner’s family group via the invitation.
    • Confirm that there are available share slots and that the invitee has accepted the invitation using the correct Microsoft account.
