In a lot of my excel worksheets my data is the same, I have always been able to copy and paste the information into cells.

Now I can not and it is very frustrating. Can some one please tell me what to do?

    Hi @101 Corvette,

Thank you for reaching out, and I’m sorry to hear how frustrating this has been, especially when something that has always worked suddenly stops. As a forum moderator, I genuinely wish I could directly access your account or delve into the backend systems to diagnose and fix this for you. However, our role here is limited to providing general guidance and solutions that can be applied by users.

Before suggesting specific fixes, I’ll need a bit more information to help narrow down what may have changed and why copy/paste is no longer working. Would you mind sharing the following details?

    • Which version of Excel are you using (for example, Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2021, or Excel for the web)?
    • Does this issue occur in all workbooks or only specific files?
    • What exactly happens when you try to copy and paste? Is Paste grayed out? Do you receive an error message? Or does nothing happen at all?
    • Are you copying within the same workbook, between different Excel files, or from another application (such as Word, a browser, or a CSV)?
    • Does copy/paste work normally in other applications outside of Excel?
    • Have there been any recent changes, such as Office updates, new add‑ins, or changes to the file location (for example, OneDrive, a network drive, or a USB device)?

In the meantime, you can try repairing Office:

    1. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    2. Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office, select the three dots, then choose Modify.
    3. Select Online Repair (not Quick Repair).
    4. Restart your PC after the repair completes.

I hope this information is helpful. Please share the details above and let me know whether the repair makes any difference. If not, we can work through this together. Thank you for your patience and understanding, and I look forward to your reply.

Try these steps to restore copy and paste behavior in Excel:

    1. Check the paste area size and shape
If copying a block of cells, the paste area must match its size and shape.
      • Select only the top‑left cell where the copied data should start, then use Home > Paste.
      • Or, before pasting, select a range with the same number of rows and columns as the copied range, then use Home > Paste.
    2. Ensure there is enough space (columns) to paste
If pasting a wide range and Excel cannot fit it:
      • Select the column header to the right of where the data should go.
      • On the Home tab, select Insert to add more columns.
      • Repeat until there is enough room, then paste again.
    3. Match cell formats when pasting large amounts of data
If pasting a lot of data into a column:
      • Select the column header (A, B, C, etc.) where the data will go.
      • On Home, open the Number Format menu and choose a format that matches the data (e.g., Text, Number, Date).
      • Paste again, one column at a time if needed.
    4. Paste only values, formats, or formulas if formulas are involved
If formulas are causing issues when copying:
      • Copy the cells.
      • Select the top‑left cell of the destination.
      • On Home > Paste, choose Paste Values, Paste Formatting, or Paste Formulas depending on what is needed.

If the issue is that nothing at all pastes, test in a new blank workbook. If copy/paste works there, the problem is likely related to the layout (size/shape) or formatting of the specific sheets.
