Microsoft 365 Basic does not include the desktop Word app, only 100 GB of OneDrive storage and access to the free web versions of Word and other apps in a browser. That is why Word disappeared and why it cannot be reinstalled as a desktop app with a Microsoft 365 Basic subscription.
To use Word again on the computer as a desktop app, one of these is required:
- Upgrade to a plan that includes desktop apps (Microsoft 365 Personal or Microsoft 365 Family). After upgrading, sign in at https://www.office.com with the same Microsoft account, go to Apps, and select Install apps to download and install the desktop apps.
- Or, purchase a one-time Office product (such as Office Home & Business) and install it from the Microsoft account dashboard.
In the meantime, Word can still be used in a web browser by signing in with the Microsoft account associated with the Microsoft 365 Basic subscription.
