A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Follow these steps to work around the “service is currently unavailable” issue and get the Hotmail personal account into Microsoft Authenticator:
- Confirm Authenticator is current and healthy
- Open Microsoft Authenticator on the iPhone.
- Go to Settings and ensure:
- App updates is turned on and the app is the latest version.
- Turn off battery optimization is enabled for better sync performance.
- Notification Settings → Show notifications is turned on.
- Make sure the iPhone’s Date & Time are set correctly and iOS is fully updated.
- If using a VPN, temporarily disconnect it and try again.
- Add the Microsoft account from the web side instead of only from the app
This often bypasses transient “service unavailable” issues when adding the account directly in the app.
- On a browser (PC or the iPhone’s browser), go to the Security tab of the Microsoft account:
https://account.microsoft.com/security. - Select Manage how I sign in to show sign-in methods.
- Select Add a new way to sign in or verify.
- Choose Use an app.
- If Authenticator is already installed on the iPhone, select Set up a different Authenticator app and then Next to display the QR code.
- On the iPhone, open Microsoft Authenticator → tap the + icon → choose Personal account → Scan a QR Code and scan the code shown in the browser.
- If the camera cannot be used, on the PC select I can't scan the bar code and on the phone choose Enter code manually, then type the code shown.
- On a browser (PC or the iPhone’s browser), go to the Security tab of the Microsoft account:
- Turn on two-step verification (if not already enabled)
- Still on the Security page of the Microsoft account, scroll to Two-step verification and turn it On.
- Follow the on-screen instructions; a QR code will again be provided for Authenticator as part of setup.
- If QR scanning still fails or “service unavailable” persists
- Re-check network: switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
- Ensure no system-wide restrictions (Screen Time, device management profiles, or security apps) are blocking Authenticator’s network access.
- If the issue continues across different networks and after updating, wait a short period and retry, as the troubleshooting guidance notes that QR scanning and account addition require the latest app version and healthy connectivity.
Once the account is successfully added, Authenticator can be used either as a way to verify sign-in, as a second factor for two-step verification, or eventually as the primary passwordless sign-in method if desired.
