2026-04-23T15:08:22.02+00:00 Hi,
May I know what error code you get while signing in using your password?
I helped another user yesterday with a similar issue by first suggesting to turn on account passwordless, and turning it off.
- Install Microsoft Authenticator on your phone and sign in with your Microsoft account
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com/security → open Advanced security options
- Click Add a new way to sign in or verify → choose Use an app and complete setup
- Find Passwordless account and click Turn on
- Approve the notification in the Authenticator app
- Done — you’ll now sign in using the app (approval, PIN, or biometrics) instead of a password
- Turn it off and set the password.
I’m eager to hear back and work together to find a solution.

Q&A Assist2026-04-23T13:39:36.91+00:00 AI generated content. This question contains an answer created with AI from Q&A Assist. Learn moreThe account is likely requiring two-step verification or updated security info, so password-only sign-in is no longer allowed.
When two-step verification or additional security checks are enabled, the system will regularly ask for a verification code sent to a phone number or email address instead of accepting only the password. This happens especially if:
- Security info (phone/email) was recently added or changed.
- The system detects unusual activity or sign-in from a new device/location.
- The account is configured so that a second factor is always required.
To review and fix this, sign in (using the current “sign in another way” method) and then:
- Go to the Microsoft account security pages referenced in the articles (Security info, two-step verification, etc.).
- Check the listed phone numbers, email addresses, and sign-in methods and remove anything you don’t recognize.
- If you don’t recognize the security info being offered, follow the guidance to recover the account and update the security info.
- If you want to change how you sign in, look for options such as changing sign-in preferences or turning off two-step verification (if available and appropriate for the account type).
If the account keeps asking for codes and you cannot adjust the settings, use the sign-in helper or account recovery options and, if necessary, contact support and explain that the account is always forcing code-based sign-in.
