Supervised chat settings in Microsoft Teams for Education are controlled by the school’s IT administrator and educators, not by students. This setting cannot be turned off from a student account.

When supervised chat is enabled:

• Students with restricted chat permissions cannot start private chats with other students. They can only start chats with designated chat supervisors (educators) and can participate in chats they are invited to by a supervisor.
• Students cannot add or remove participants or remove a supervisor from a chat.
• If private chat is fully disabled, students can still communicate in class channels by posting messages and @mentioning their educator.

To change this, it is necessary to:

• Contact the school’s educator or IT administrator and ask about the current chat permissions (restricted, limited, or disabled private chat) and whether they are willing to adjust them.

Students themselves have no option in Teams or Windows settings to turn off supervised chat or change these permissions.
