I have an educator account with Microsoft 365, but half way through the day yesterday (6 May) it suddenly told me I have "view only" access. Yesterday morning, everything was working fine. I've restarted, logged out and logged back in. I tried registering again, and I'm told I already have an account. Any advice?

    Dear @Peter Konstantopoulos,

The “View Only” issue may occur intermittently when your OneDrive or SharePoint sites are in a "ReadOnly" state. If you are an administrator of the education tenant, please review the site Lock State and unlock it if it is set to ReadOnly. You may follow the guidance provided in the article below for detailed instructions on how to check and manage the lock status: Lock and unlock sites - SharePoint in Microsoft 365 | Microsoft Learn

If the site is already unlocked and the issue persists, I strongly recommend contacting Microsoft Support. The support team can investigate further with the back-end team to determine whether your tenant has been restricted from editing due to an underlying issue or an unintended action. To create a support ticket, please refer to the following article: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn

If you are an end-user, please help me to reach out directly to IT Admin for further support.

Additionally, since you are using an education tenant, you may need to verify certificates or domain configurations required for educational use.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

The “view only” message typically means the Microsoft 365 Education subscription or license attached to the educator account is no longer active or has changed. This is controlled by the school or institution, not by the local device.

Since this is an education/educator scenario, the next steps are:

    1. Contact the school or institution’s Microsoft 365 administrator
      • Ask them to verify:
        • That the educator account still has an active Microsoft 365 Education license assigned.
        • That the license includes the apps and services being used (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.).
        • That the account has not been moved, disabled, or changed to a different license tier.
    2. Confirm the correct account is in use
      • Ensure sign-in is with the school/educator work or school account (the email assigned by the institution), not a personal Microsoft account.
      • If unsure which account is tied to the license, open a desktop app like Word, go to File → Account, and check the account shown under Product Information.
    3. Use education-specific help resources
      • For educator-specific issues with Microsoft 365 Education, use the Education help center referenced in the Microsoft 365 Education guidance.

If the admin confirms the license is valid and correctly assigned but the issue persists, the admin should use their Microsoft 365 admin tools and support channels to investigate further, as end users cannot fix license state changes themselves.
