Text-based conversations between users with searchable history in Microsoft Teams Free
Hi Bryron Blackmon,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.
In Microsoft Teams (including Teams Free/personal accounts), a group chat isn’t capped at 4 people—Microsoft’s guidance indicates a group chat can include up to 250 participants, so you don’t need to upgrade to a Business account just to add more than 4 people to a chat.
Regarding your question about an “address book”: no, you don’t have to add people to an address book first. You can add people directly by typing their name (and in Teams Free scenarios, you can also use email address or phone number where supported).
How to add people to an existing group chat (PC/Web):
- Open the group chat > select View and add participants > Add people
- Enter the names (or email/phone if needed) > if prompted, choose how much chat history to include > select Add
Since you can only add up to 4 people, that behavior is more likely related to the current account/app state rather than the standard group chat capacity. (A quick way to narrow it down is to try adding participants from Teams on the web, update Teams, or start a new group chat and add everyone in the “To:” field.)
