    Dear @Andrew Forshaw

Thank you for sharing your concern.

When you create a Microsoft 365 Business subscription, a new work account is automatically set up using your company domain (e.g., ******@companyname.com or ******@companyname.onmicrosoft.com).

The personal Microsoft account used during sign-up is mainly for billing and notifications, not tenant administration. After setup, you’ll receive a confirmation email with your new account details and a temporary password for first-time access.

To help me better understand the situation and assist you effectively, could you please share a few details such as:

1/ Where exactly do you see your personal account listed as an admin? For example: Is it in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center or another portal?

2/ Have you received any emails from Microsoft regarding the subscription setup, including information about a newly created admin account?

3/ Which Microsoft 365 subscription did you sign up for?

If possible, screenshots or additional details would be very helpful in identifying what is happening in your environment. This will help me better understand the context and provide more targeted support.

Removing a personal Microsoft account as the admin of a business (Microsoft 365) tenant is a two‑step process: first transfer admin responsibility to an internal work account, then remove or stop using the personal account.

    1. Create or identify a work account to be the new admin
      • Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center using the existing Global Administrator account (the personal Microsoft account that originally set up the subscription).
      • Create a new user in the organization’s domain (for example, an account on the company’s custom domain) and assign it the Global Administrator role.
      • Only a Global Administrator can perform the tasks needed to manage or ultimately close a business account.
      • For background on admin roles, see About admin roles referenced in the business account closure article.
    2. Sign in and verify the new admin account
      • Sign out of the personal account and sign in with the new work admin account.
      • Confirm that this account can manage users, subscriptions, and domains.
    3. Remove or demote the personal account from the tenant
      • While signed in as the new Global Administrator, remove the Global Administrator role from the personal account.
      • If the personal account should no longer exist in the tenant at all, remove that user from the tenant (after confirming it is not the only owner of any critical resources and that any needed data has been backed up or transferred).
      • If the personal account is also used as a personal Microsoft account (Xbox, Skype, etc.), do not close the personal Microsoft account itself unless absolutely sure; instead, just remove it from the business tenant.
    4. If the goal is to fully close the business account
      • If the intent is not just to remove the personal account as admin but to close the entire business account, follow the business account closure process. A Global Administrator must:
        • Back up any data to be preserved.
        • Ensure subscriptions are canceled or expired.
        • Then follow the documented steps to close the Microsoft business account.
      • Details and prerequisites are described in Close your Microsoft business account.
    5. If the personal and work accounts share the same email address
      • If there is both a personal Microsoft account and a work/school account using the same email address and sign‑in prompts are confusing, consider renaming the personal Microsoft account by changing its primary alias so that it no longer matches the work account address.
      • This is done from the Manage how you sign in section of the Microsoft account, where a different email alias can be made primary. See Which account do you want to use? for details.

Once a work account holds the Global Administrator role and the personal account is removed or demoted, the company account is no longer administered by the personal Microsoft account.
