Microsoft Authenticator Not Working

I recently upgraded my cell phone to a Sumsung S26 and Microsoft Authenticator stopped working. It looks like my account is in a 30 day waiting period to reset my security credentials. I need to use authenticator to access my works email account.

I'm not a Microsoft support agent, but I've dealt with this kind of issue before and want to point you in the right direction.

Since this is a work account, the fastest fix is to contact your company's IT helpdesk and ask them to reset your MFA registration in Microsoft Entra (Azure AD). They can do this in minutes, and it completely bypasses the 30-day waiting period. This waiting period only applies to self-service resets, not admin-initiated ones.

When you reach IT, specifically ask them to:

    1.  Reset your MFA methods in the Microsoft Entra admin center, or

    2.  Issue you a Temporary Access Pass (TAP). This is a one-time code that lets you log in and re-register your Authenticator app on your new phone.

If, for some reason, you don't have an IT admin, you can try Microsoft's account recovery at account.live.com/acsr or call their support line directly at 1-800-642-7676

Hope that gets you back in quickly!

The 30‑day security info reset waiting period cannot be bypassed. During this time, existing security info (like the previous Microsoft Authenticator registration) is considered untrusted and new methods cannot be fully used until the period ends.

For a work account, the only way to regain access before the 30 days expire is for an administrator to reset or clear the MFA methods on the account:

    1. Contact the organization’s IT Help desk or a Microsoft Entra administrator and explain that access to Microsoft Authenticator was lost after changing phones and that the account is now in a 30‑day security info reset period.
    2. Ask the admin to reset the MFA methods or “Require re‑register MFA” for the user so that new authentication methods can be configured immediately.
    3. After the admin clears the settings, sign in again to the work account. The sign‑in will prompt to set up Microsoft Authenticator (or another MFA method) on the new Samsung device.
    4. Complete the new registration and confirm that sign‑ins to work email now succeed.

If the account is the only admin account in the tenant and no other admin can reset MFA, a support request with Microsoft (Data Protection team) is required, as described in the referenced guidance.

If sign‑in attempts have been made repeatedly while testing, Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication may temporarily block further attempts. In that case, wait before trying again or use another MFA method if one is available.
