Copilot doesn't open

I had been using Copilot on this computer for a few months. It is an HP laptop running Windows 10 because it is not compatable with Windows 11. Then one day a couple weeks ago I noticed it had been replaced with Copilot 365. I do not like that version as I very seldom use MS office and it seems to be geared towards office. I use Office apps less than once a month, but daily use Visual Studio 2019 and MMS. I deleted the 365 version and reinstalled the stand alone version of Copilot. Once it installed it opened. After closing it however, I can now no longer get it to open. It shows the app underlined in the start menu. Yet no instances of Copilot are displayed on the screen and none show up in task manager. Using another computer, I asked Copilot on that machine how to fix the issue on this one, and it had me looking at Edge WebView2. I tried everything it suggested. Nothing works. How do I get that version back???

    Hi M J,

Thank you for your detailed explanation.

If you haven’t already, I recommend trying the steps provided by the AI answer response first, as they cover reinstalling the app and running the built-in troubleshooters.

If the issue persists after those steps, you can try creating a new Windows user account to check whether the problem is specific to your current profile. To do this, go to Settings > Accounts > Family & other users, then select Add someone else to this PC. Follow the prompts to create a new account (you can choose a local account if preferred), then sign out of your current account and sign in to the new one. Once signed in, open Copilot to see if it works normally. If it does, this indicates the issue is likely related to your original user profile.

Please feel free to update me on the result after trying these steps, I’ll be happy to continue assisting if needed.

Copilot on Windows is now delivered as an app, and it can be removed and reinstalled if it stops working or was replaced by another variant.

To get the standalone Copilot app working again on the Windows 10 HP laptop:

    1. Uninstall the current Copilot app
      • Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features (or Installed apps).
      • Search for Copilot.
      • Select it, choose Uninstall, and complete the removal.
    2. Reinstall Copilot from Microsoft Store
      • Open Microsoft Store on the device.
      • Search for Copilot.
      • Install the Copilot app from Microsoft.
      • After installation, start Copilot from Start > All apps > Copilot and confirm it opens.
    3. If Copilot still does not open
      • Repeat the uninstall/reinstall steps to ensure a clean install.
      • If issues persist, run the Copilot troubleshooters via the Get Help app:
        • Open Get Help.
        • Search for Copilot connectivity troubleshooter if the app opens but cannot connect.
        • Follow the on-screen steps and apply any fixes.

These steps restore the Copilot app itself and address common launch/connectivity issues without requiring Windows 11.
