Hi. I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

This behavior (X sign over the volume button) is usually caused by a problem with the audio driver.

To be able to assist you better, please clarify the following:

Are you trying to play audio via internal speakers, external speakers, or headphones?

If it is an external speaker or headphones, does it have a standard audio connector (Jack connector) or USB connector, or is it connected via Bluetooth?

Also, share a screenshot of your system information.

    • Press "Windows + R", type msinfo32 and press Enter.

Maximize the window and use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.

    Looking forward to your reply.

Follow these steps in order on a Windows 10 PC with an X over the volume icon:

    1. Check the output device
    • Select the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
    • Select the arrow to open the list of audio devices.
    • Choose the correct device (for example, laptop speakers or the speakers/headphones actually in use).
    1. Check hardware and volume controls
    • Make sure speaker/headphone cables are firmly plugged in and in the correct jack (green for output on many PCs).
    • Ensure speakers are powered on.
    • Turn up the volume on both Windows and the physical speaker controls.
    • If using USB speakers/headphones, try a different USB port.
    • Unplug headphones to see if built‑in speakers start working.
    1. Check sound settings and mute state
    • Right‑click the Speakers icon on the taskbar and select Open Volume mixer.
    • Ensure none of the sliders show a red muted icon; if they do, select them to unmute.
    • Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
    • Select the output device, then Device properties, and make sure Disable is not checked for both output and input devices.
    1. Set the correct default audio device
    • Open Control Panel.
    • Select Hardware and Sound > Sound.
    • On the Playback tab, right‑click the correct speakers/headphones and select Set as Default Device, then OK.
    1. Run the audio troubleshooter
    • Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates and install any available updates.
    • Then go to Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
    • Run the Audio (Playing Audio) troubleshooter and apply any fixes it suggests.
    1. Check for missing or faulty audio driver
    • Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
    • If no audio device appears or it shows a warning icon, install or update the audio driver from the PC or motherboard manufacturer.
    • If a recent update broke audio, try rolling back to a previous audio driver version.

If Device Manager shows no audio device at all and reinstalling the correct driver does not restore it, the issue may be hardware‑related and require manufacturer or repair support.
