Help! Somehow, my happy hands triggered an entire document edit of a strikeout through the end Microsoft Word document. I have tried and failed, twice, to correct it using Cont A, Control H, Format, etc.

Also, I am unable to open my document MEMOIR. It won't open in DESKTOP for editing, and it won't open in live docs. Something is wrong, wrong, wrong!

Somehow, my happy hands triggered an entire document edit of a strikeout through the end Microsoft Word document. I have tried and failed, twice, to correct it using Cont A, Control H, Format, etc.

Use Ctrl+A to select all the text in the document. In the Font dialog box (press Ctrl+D), click "Strikethrough" so that the check box becomes completely clear. If you see a filled box, click twice (which first selects and then clears the option). For illustration, have a look at the screen shot below.

Note that if you are saying that you see strikethrough formatting in a different color, you may have inadvertently enabled Track Changes.

To remove the strikeout from the whole document and address the document that will not open, use these steps.

    1. Remove single-line strikethrough from the entire document
      1. Open the affected document in Word (desktop).
      2. Press Ctrl+A to select all text.
      3. Go to Home > Strikethrough to toggle strikethrough off for all selected text.
        • If some text still shows double strikethrough, open the Font dialog (Home > small launcher arrow in the Font group), go to the Font tab, clear Double strikethrough, and select OK.
    2. If the document MEMOIR will not open at all First, determine whether the issue is with that file only or with Word itself:
      1. Try opening other Word documents.
        • If other documents open normally, MEMOIR may be damaged.
        • If other documents also fail or Word crashes, Word or Office may be damaged.
    3. Try “Open and Repair” on MEMOIR
      1. In Word, select File > Open > Browse.
      2. Navigate to the MEMOIR document.
      3. Click once on the file to select it.
      4. Select the arrow on the Open button and choose Open and Repair.
      5. If the document opens, immediately save it under a new name.
    4. If Word shows strange behavior or MEMOIR still will not open The file or Word’s environment may be damaged. Follow these Word troubleshooting steps: A. Check whether the problem is document-specific
      1. Open several other Word documents.
      2. If they open correctly, the problem is likely with MEMOIR.
      3. If multiple documents show errors, layout corruption, or Word stops responding, troubleshoot Word/Office instead of the document.
      B. Force Word to repair the file again
      1. In Word, go to File > Open.
      2. In the Open dialog, highlight MEMOIR.
      3. Use the Open dropdown > Open and Repair.
      C. If MEMOIR opens but behaves oddly (layout, unreadable characters, freezes) Use the damaged-document recovery methods:
      • Method 1 (if it opens):
        1. Create a new blank document (File > New > Blank document).
        2. Open MEMOIR.
        3. Press Ctrl+End, then Ctrl+Shift+Home to select all content.
        4. On Home, select Copy.
        5. Switch to the new document (View > Switch Windows) and select Paste.
        6. Save the new document under a new name.
      • If the document contains section breaks, copy only text between section breaks (in Draft view) to avoid carrying corruption into the new file.
    5. If Word itself is failing to open or repair documents Run an Office repair so Word can be fixed:
      1. Close all Office apps.
      2. Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
      3. Select the Microsoft 365/Office product.
      4. Choose Change.
      5. Select Quick Repair and then Repair.
      6. If problems persist, run an Online Repair as described in the Office repair article; this may reinstall Office, so ensure the subscription and account are in good standing first.

If after repair Word opens other documents but MEMOIR still will not open even with Open and Repair, the file is likely severely corrupted and may not be fully recoverable; partial recovery using the copy/paste methods (if it opens even briefly) is the main supported option.
